Executive Women in Business Ida McMurray, CCIM, SIOR, NAI CIR Family, health and friends are as important as wealth

ily has been involved in real estate since I was very young, so the profession seemed a natural fit. I have been an independent agent at NAI CIR for more than 6 years and in the business for over 17 years. What were some of your early goals and did any- thing happen in your ca- reer /profession to change them? My early goals were to have a family, obtain a certain income level and be respected by my peers. Every January I write down my goals for the year and look at them often. When I first started, I actually made

a collage of pictures that I kept in my notebook to help keep focused. I still have it. What unique qualities and or personality do you feel makes you most successful in your profession? I have a talent for keeping transactions on track. I can identify obstacles early on in the process, but more impor- tantly, I am diligent in finding solutions. I also do a consider- able amount of research on my clients and customers to have a solid understanding of their business. What challenges and or obstacles do you feel you needed to overcome to be-

come as successful as you are today? I had to understand the true meaning of success to me and how it is measured. Once it be- came clear that family, health and friends are as important as wealth, everything came together. I enjoy going to work every day and I look forward to seeing my family every day. It’s nice. What was the most defin- ing moment for you as a woman in the profession you are currently in? I was sought out by a large international corporation that only worked with women real- tors. They had very positive experiences with women real- tors in the past. It was a sizable transaction and I felt that the bar was a little higher because of their expectation. There was a lot of pressure to uphold their standard for women in the profession. What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment as a women in today’s business environment? I am very proud to hold both the CCIM and the SIOR des- ignations. There are only 121 women, worldwide, that hold the SIOR designation which requires, in addition to other criteria, testimony and spon- sorship from peers outside of my firm who hold the designa- tion. My peers took the time to complete a lengthy profile of me. It was rewarding to know that they had good things to say about my interactions with them. Do you feel there are any differences in the way that men and women develop business relationships and if so, what activities or ven- ues do you participate in? I do believe there are differ- ences. But for me developing relationships is not difficult. Once I am in contact, I can usually find common ground to build on. I attend mixers and social events in addition to some of the CCIM and SIOR functions. However, I have a passion to help others, which draws me to volunteer for non profit organizations, assist in clothing drives, cancer walks etc. It amazes me to see people with whom I do business serv- ing in the same ways and I have developed many relationships from those activities. Tell us a little about your family. continued on page 16D
