evening classes and earned both my Associates and Bachelor’s degrees. During this time I was also able to become one of the youngest managers in the company. My next job took me through sales and telemarketing, ulti- mately leading to my becoming one of the first female sales as- sociates for Creative Financial Group, however this position proved to be the jumping-off point to the balance of my career, as a prospect/client in- troduced me to the Real Estate business. I joined their team for sales/leasing in their full-

service real estate firm. What were some of your early goals and did anything happen in your career /pro- fession to change them? My goals have evolved over the years. Initially my goal was to earn a college degree and maximize every opportunity afforded to me, which I accom- plished early on. Eventually, as I grew within the Real Estate industry, I gained the confidence and de- sire to become an entrepreneur. I started by reading “How to Start a Business for Dummies” and coupled that with my vi-

sion, determination and hard work. These attributes have allowed me to be able to cre- ate and maintain a successful business. What unique qualities and or personality do you feel makes you most successful in your profession? I believe it’s a combination of vision, tenacity/perseverance and listening/communication. What challenges and or obstacles do you feel you needed to overcome to be- come as successful as you are today? My biggest challenges have been locating outside funding, maneuvering through various economic changes that we all have faced and navigating through human resource man- agement. Do you feel being a woman is an advantage in today’s business world? I believe it can be both an at- tribute and a struggle. On one hand, it can be a benefit in open- ing door due to our designation as a WBE. The application and approval process to obtain this distinction is not an easy one and is a distinction that I wear proudly. However, I believe being a woman has not helped me in terms of getting business. I believe that smart, ethical business people will do well, regardless of gender. Do you feel there are any differences in the way that men and women develop business relationships and if so, what activities or ven- ues do you participate in? Yes, there is a difference. I’ve found that the popular Mars/ Venus axiom really rings true. Women tend to create deeper, more personal relationships, whereas men tend to create business-only, friendly relation- ships. Recognizing this does not necessarily mean activities and venues change, it does mean, in my opinion, that one needs to be cognizant of one’s audience and present oneself accordingly. Tell us a little about your family. My family structure has grown over the years as I shared many of life’s ups and downs with an expanding network of friends. Who do you feel was most influential in your life when choosing this profession? Donna DeHart Hegarty, who continued on page 16D
