Game On - Spring 2024

42 GAME ON | SPRING 2024 is two inches better than his best jump from a season ago. Discus throwers Bowen Kruse and Ryan Hock have been im- pressive in early-season prac- pushed. He’s got Logan, he’s got Zain, he’s got Harrison.” Bleich has already shown what he can add to the lineup as a rookie. During the indoor season, he turned in a two-mile time of 9:34.15, a time that cur- rently sits ninth in 3A and a time that would have placed seventh in last spring’s state race, just two seconds behind the sixth- place performance of 2023 Gil- bert graduate William Wadsley. So the Tigers have things cov- ered on the track. But what about on the infield and outside the gates? Yep, we’re talking about the field events. “We have some things in the field,” Franzen said. “I’m feeling pretty good about that.” Dillon Zwanziger, a senior, has already jumped 6-foot-3 in the high jump this spring, which the pieces are in place for a successful spring season. “What I like about those guys is we’re able to move them from the 800 to the 3,200 across the board,” Franzen said. “Logan has real potential and he’s done enough other running outside of school to understand how to race. For Carson, he has that motor and he likes to get

tices, and Danny Buss and Na- than Baldwin are returning shot put throwers. “Dillon has started out jump- ing really well,” Franzen said. “The one field event that is kind of open right now is long jump. We’re still working on that.” Again, this is why the regular season is so crucial to the team’s overall development. Franzen knows how difficult the schedule will be, and he’s well aware the Raccoon River Con- ference oozes talent. Sure, the season has barely begun and the statewide leaderboard will be influx throughout the month of April, but currently the RRC has the individual 3A leaders in the 100 (ADM’s Brevin Doll) and 400 (Carlisle’s Braedin Zondervan), as well as the 4x200 relay (ADM). There are currently nine RRC individuals ranked in the top five of events, and another eight relays ranked among the 3A top five. Among those ranked relays is Gilbert’s 4x800; Mueller, Stoker, Kraehling, and Emmett Barber joined forces to put up the cur- rent fourth-fastest time in the class. Will Hawthorne (front), a junior, was one of the Tigers’ top sprinters during the 2023 season and ran on one state-qualifying relay. He’ll be back to help the sprinters this spring, and he’s also going to dabble in the throws as a shot put competi- tor for Gilbert.
