Theology

Natural Theology Five Views James K. Dew Jr. and Ronnie P. Campbell Jr., editors Natural theology is a matter of debate among theologians and Christian philosophers. In this book, top scholars in the fields of theology and Christian philosophy introduce readers to five pre - vailing views on the topic. Contributors include John C. McDowell, Alister E. McGrath, Paul K. Moser, Fr. Andrew Pinsent, and Charles Taliaferro. The contributors offer constructive approaches from major perspectives—contemporary, Catholic, classical, deflationary, and Barthian—in a multiview format to provide readers with the “state of the question” on natural theology. Each unit consists of an in- troduction by a proponent of the view under discussion, responses from the other contributors, and a final response by the proponent. James Dew and Ronnie Campbell provide a helpful introduction and conclusion. The book offers a model of critical thinking and respectful dialogue. “In this thought-provoking book, leading scholars from five distinct viewpoints come together to discuss key questions concerning natural theology. Through their engaging and insightful dialogue, this volume provides a comprehensive and balanced overview of the subject. It is a must-read for scholars and students of philoso- phy and theology as well as for anyone interested in exploring the relationship between faith and reason.” —YUJIN NAGASAWA, University of Oklahoma “The views represented in this work, and the collegiality with which its authors present them, will guide twenty-first-century Christians in their consideration of the often-overlooked doctrine of natural theology.” —KATIE J. McCOY, Texas Baptists FROM THE BOOK For some, natural theology is an enterprise that provides wonderful apologetic resources for those defending the faith. But for others, natural theology is a failed experiment that is filled with theological compromise, weak philosophical arguments, and poor scientific data. Suffice it to say, anyone looking for a robust theological, phil - osophical, and scientific debate will find plenty of it in the topic of natural theology. . . . Debate is a necessary and important element of theological discourse, and the contributions to this volume on natural theology by Taliaferro, Pinsent, McGrath, Moser, and McDowell are a gift to everyone interested in this important subject matter.
