REICHLE & DE-MASSARI MARKET TRENDS IN 2023
against extreme temperatures vibrations, salt spray, dirt and moisture. Ideally, HEC connectors should offer blind mating and mechanical protection of ferrules, high packing density and lockable push-pull. Decoupling of standard connectors (LC, SC, MPO) in the housing from the cable strain relief is a desirable feature, along with protective caps for adapters and connector housings to help prevent contamination. Given the extreme outdoor conditions, features such as reduction of oscillations of the protective cover in case of vibration or wind, up to 450 N tensile stress and UV- resistance are practical. DATA CENTRES: PART OF THE CONVERGENCE TREND. The need for efficient, easily operable infrastructure has increased demand for (hyper-)converged solutions. Countless applications require real-time data processing on-site or close to where the action is in order to realise required speed and reliability. Hybrid DCs can provide this by offering a combination of virtual, physical (on premise), and cloud infrastructure. Latency-related drivers such as 5G and IoT will push further growth in this area. Depending on their needs, businesses can use edge DCs combined with main and local data centres. This approach introduces vast scalability and flexibility but also introduces considerations related to infrastructure compatibility, energy, modularity, management, security and density.
centre infrastructures. The QR concept is also gaining acceptance in places where plug-in points are difficult to access or where skilled labour is hard to find, such as in the area of LAN and FTTH infrastructures, in networks and at home. Fibre-optic cabling is increasingly used in environments in which it can be exposed to large temperature fluctuations. The result: the cable sheath stretches or shrinks which has an effect on the fibre contacts, reflected in increased attenuation IL and reduced backscatter attenuation RL. So, ideally, cabling should be fully resistant to shrinking. Unlike copper, fibre allows DC operators to migrate to higher speeds relatively quickly and easily. Local networks can establish long-distance connections via a fibre backbone providing fast, high-capacity connectivity between DCs, edge DCs, and end users. Some DCs are even developing their
own optical point-to-point optical networks to realise cost savings while accommodating bandwidth growth and increasing flexibility. More enterprise Micro DCs are being linked via fibre- based access and backbone networks. As the move to 400 G / 800 G continues, DCs are evaluating infrastructure and determining its future-readiness. 40 G / 100 G require eight fibres in parallel pairs, but higher speeds require 16 or 32 pairs, which further boosts cable density. Data centre architectures are rapidly moving toward spine-leaf and fibre-dense mesh networks, and EoR/MoR and ToR solutions that help simplify data centre network and deliver higher capacity. Smart migration paths, high-density- friendly products, preconfigured solutions and monitoring/asset management will be needed to support 400G/800G. HIGHER DENSITY WITH QR SOLUTIONS
MPO connectors or MPO/MTP®, LC or LC duplex connectors and SC connectors can do almost any job in almost any application. However, as data centres have to densify fibre- optic cabling in order to build faster networks, MPO, LC and SC or their plug-in windows take up too much space. But they cannot be replaced easily with ultra-slim cabling. Combining convenient handling and push- pull mechanisms can increase fibre patch panel packing density by 50 %. Ideally, a chosen solution would offer polarity changing, easy unlocking of LCd connectors from sensitive SFP transceivers, protect patch cords, ferrules and housings and enable plugging and unplugging of MPO-QR, LC QR and SC-QR. QR connectors are not only finding support in and around high-density data
