MORSE CODE The Official Magazine for Cheltenham’s Annual Members
MARCH 2023
Welcome
Love Our Turf
It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Cheltenham Festival edition of Morse Code, our Annual Members publication, named in honour of the 1938 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner. The names of many past Cheltenham Gold Cup winners will have the dust blown off them in the coming months, as we embark on a year-long celebration of “the greatest” steeplechase, which turns one hundred next March. The centenary will provide us with a unique opportunity to promote the sport of racing to thousands of people as we plan to embark on a trophy tour to the far flung corners of the country. Reality is every year is a big one for the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup as it provides the crescendo for the best Festival of jump racing on earth. Come 3.30pm on Friday, March 17th all of us will be transfixed. Last year’s Gold Cup Day saw a record number of people attend. Post-covid excitement led to an unprecedented demand for tickets and
we welcomed over 70,000 people through our turnstiles.
Last year we saw a marked increase in the number of anti-social behaviour incidents reported by our local residents who cited racegoers as being responsible. Most of these occurred as pedestrians made their way back into town along the Evesham Road. The racecourse promised our local community that we would increase our involvement beyond the racecourse boundary and find ways to mitigate concerns. In November we successfully trialled the Love Our Turf campaign, which saw large numbers of wayfinding stewards positioned along the main arterial routes to the racecourse. The presence of stewards acted as a deterrent and we witnessed a significant reduction in the number of issues reported.
All four days cumulatively attracted around 270,000.
The concerted opinion of all was that it was too many and the race day experience was impacted because of it, so a decision was made to reduce the number of attendees each day to a maximum of 68,500. It is hoped that this reduction will alleviate some of the pressure of the occasion and lead to a more comfortable environment. Gold Cup Day is once again a sell-out event however, being an Annual Member removes this concern. You won’t have to miss a jump and I am sure like me, you will love all 22 jumps and three miles two furlongs of it.
the number of roadside toilets and made extra provision for the collection of rubbish. For the Festival the operational element of Love Our Turf will be supported by an advertising campaign that will try to encourage people to act more responsibly and show more consideration to those who live and work around the racecourse.
To support the work of the stewards we increased

Cheltenham Radio Special Members Offer Cheltenham Radio has long been an important source of information for our racegoers at the Festival. We know it is widely listened to as people approach the racecourse in their cars. However, it is possible to listen on-course as well with the provision of an exclusive Cheltenham Radio headset tuned to 87.7FM. We would like to offer our Members a chance to listen to the action for just £1. To purchase a headset at this discounted price, please visit the Information Point or the Members Desk in the Hall of Fame. Tote’s Biggest Pools Of The Year The Festival sees the biggest Tote pools of the National Hunt season with over £10,000,000 set to be bet by Cheltenham racegoers alone. Tote Guarantee ensures you get SP or better on all win bets and win part of each way bets, guaranteed. So, you can bet with the Tote in confidence that you’ll never be paid less than SP and you can often collect more. For example, in the Martin Pipe last year, Banbridge had an SP of 12/1 and Tote paid £16.20. Exclusive to The Festival is the £1,000,000 minimum guaranteed Placepot pool which is available on all four days. The Placepot is the Tote’s most popular multi race bet where you need a placed horse in the first six races. This has the potential for punters to win big for a small stake and in 2019 a Cheltenham racegoer collected £182k from a £2 Placepot bet. Plus, there’s excellent value to be had on the Exacta (pick the 1, 2) and Trifecta (pick the 1, 2, 3) which both pay more than their SP equivalent on average. This is ideal if you fancy more than one horse in a race or there is a short price favourite you think can’t be beaten. At The Festival last year, the average Exacta pay-out was £154, and Trifecta was a massive £2,527, both to a £1 unit stake. Tote will have more than 500 operators at The Festival and offer a service in all Annual Members’ facilities. Pay using cash, UK debit card or mobile pay. And remember, betting with the Tote supports this racecourse with profits being returned to the course.
The Official Sporting Life Cheltenham Preview Night One of the most popular preview nights in the

concerns about the family’s lack of money by riding on his rocking horse. One day he discovers whilst doing this he can predict the winners of future races. It sounds like a simple story that should provide for a happy ending however the outcomes are haunting and harrowing! A brilliant movie starring John Mills.
Around fifty of our Annual Members will be enjoying a meal of a lifetime on the Monday of the Festival week. Core on Course debuts this year as the most prestigious restaurant at the Festival, with food being prepared by award winning 3-Michelin-starred chef, Clare Smyth. The winners took part in a raffle to secure their seats with the proceeds going to WellChild. The day before the Festival will have a very different feel to it, with lots of other activities taking place, including a Racing Experience Day for local school children. What’s In A “Bar” Name – Quevega’s
The Quevega’s bar is a popular ground level bar for those people wanting to sit outside but enjoy cover. The bar is named after the French-bred Willie Mullin’s-trained mare, Quevega, who won the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle six times in a row. In doing so she beat the long-standing Festival record of the mighty Golden Miller who won five consecutive races at the Festival, Gold Cups no less, in the 1930s.

Be Part of Cheltenham Forever
For years Cheltenham has received requests for the ashes of committed Racegoers to be scattered at the racecourse. In May 2023 a special Columbarium Wall will be constructed at Cheltenham in partnership with Spirit of Sport UK to hold the cremated ashes of just 812 Jump Racing people. These people’s ashes, individually inurned in a dedicated niche, will eventually be buried under the racecourse in 2054, when they will become part of Cheltenham forever. The niches will be sold to those who have the ashes of loved ones at home and also sold to members who are likely to require a niche before 2054. Buyers of niches can also choose to donate their niches should a family members pass away during the term of the niche. This opportunity better provides for those that would like a memorial where family and friends can gather, remember, and pay their respects. The wall can be visited 365 days per year. 80% of all people in the UK choose cremation, so we do expect demand for niches to be high. Priority
is being given to Cheltenham Members and their spouses, who can buy niches off-plan until March 18th and thereafter to the wider racing public, with priority being given to those who have register their interest on the Cheltenham Columbarium webpage - Cheltenham.spiritofsport.io Customers are provided with a simple and respectful inurnment event at the racecourse on a non-race day which their friends and relatives can attend. A reception in line with their wishes can also be purchased by the guests in advance. For many, Cheltenham is a very special and happy place, and we are delighted to offer the opportunity to those who would like Cheltenham Racecourse to be their final resting place. If you wish to secure a niche for either yourself or a cremated loved one then please view the website and schedule a Zoom call. During the Festival there will be an enquiries desk for the columbarium in the Hall of Fame, if you wish to find out more.
We have received a lot of comments on the growing list of reciprocal meetings you can attend which is approaching nearly 70 events across the year. Several members made the trip to the Dublin Racing Festival recently. There are a couple of dates on the long list of options that stand out as truly special! Tuesday, April 25th and Saturday, April 29th both at the beautiful Punchestown. This popular event will need no introduction to racing fans. It is five days of the absolute, very best of many things with quality racing at the top of them. It is therefore our number one reciprocal recommendation and we hope you take advantage of the offer and enjoy some Festival racing for free!
Beyond The Festival – Guest Badges Once the madness of the Festival is behind us, we have three more fixtures. Please use these as an opportunity to bring a guest along to experience the pleasure of racing at Cheltenham. Guest badges are available on: Wednesday 19 April Thursday 20 April Friday 5 May

Top Tips At the Festival last year our experts gave you four horses to follow two of which won; Love Envoi (12-1), Flooring Porter (5-2). This year, they have identified six more that might salute the judge at good odds;
Bravemansgame (Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup) All the talk is of another Irish win and it’s hard not to be impressed by the favourite Galopin Des Champs, or to let your memory slide back to the wonderful performance of last year’s winner, A Plus Tard. The Irish however don’t always have it their own way in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, and one man who usually sees to that is Champion trainer Paul Nichols. His hope Bravemansgame has done everything right, is going the right way and is too big a price for an impressive King George VI winner.
Western Diego (Weatherby’s Champion Bumper) The Dublin Racing Festival is where we all tend to look to find the winner of many Festival races these days, however, this selection in the Weatherby’s Champion Bumper made his debut the week before in a pro-am flat race at Naas. The Mullins-trained son of Westerner was warmly supported and won with ease and since then the odds have steadily tumbled for the final race on the Wednesday. Home By The Lee (Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle) This Joseph O’Brien trained 8-year-old was 33-1 when sixth in last year’s Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle behind Flooring Porter, however his two most recent runs, first at Naas in November and then at Leopardstown in the Jack de Bromhead Christmas Hurdle indicate he is an improved horse this season. There is no reason he can’t keep on improving. He’s a great each way bet and will be sure to be running on at the end. Gaelic Warrior (Multiple entries) It was said that Gaelic Warrior would be the best bet of the Dublin Racing Festival, and so it came to pass with a simplistic victory in a tough looking handicap Liffey Handicap Hurdle under top weight. Running in the familiar colours of the Ricci’s, this German-bred 5-year-old holds an entry in the Skybet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. Whichever race he goes for, he is sure to put up a bold show. An Tailliur (Pertemps Final) Let’s face it, picking the winner of the Pertemps Network Final is probably the game of fools but one horse who rarely disappoints is the Jonjo O’Neil trained An Tailliur who rarely misses the podium. He qualified for the final courtesy of a staying on third in October at Cheltenham and hasn’t been seen in public since. The winner that day was Shoot First, who is now the 4-1 favourite for the competitive handicap, but I would rather be taking 16-1 about the local horse and hoping he can turn the tables.
Cleeve Golf Club
The first local race for a “Gold Cup” in Cheltenham was staged up on Cleeve Hill at the turn of the 19th century and much of the original track is now covered by the beautiful Cleeve Hill Golf Club. Our local golf club, which looks over our track, is kindly offering 10% off green fees for our Annual Members during Festival week. Tee off times from 6.30am. They also have a special, pre-racing breakfast and 18 holes offer which is well worth considering. Call them on 01242 675025 (Option 1) for more information.
Holland Cooper Whether you opt for a British made co-ord or a statement handmade Trench Coat, our official Cheltenham Races Female Fashion Partner Holland Cooper have you covered. For the most luxurious personal shopping experience – make sure you book a private appointment with one of their brand ambassadors at their flagship Cheltenham Boutique or contact them directly on their WhatsApp - 07940 438009
House of Cavani Get dressed with Proud Style Partners of The Jockey Club, House of Cavani and receive 15% off all suits using promo code - JOCKEY15.
Billaway (St James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup) Despite working hard to win the same Naas Hunter Chase for an incredible fourth time in succession, and charging up the hill for what looked like an improbable win in the St James Place Festival Challenge Hunter Chase last year, the 11-year-old Willie Mullins trained champion is still readily available at 10-1 to repeat his success in March. Billaway is not always one to “impress” on the track, doing just enough, making odd mistakes, having to be hard ridden but this could just be a very rare case of the market underestimating a horse that has nothing to really prove.
