MOTHER’S DAY

M o t h e r ’ s D a y is frequently met with mixed reactions. The basis lated to a father’s point of view as it is set forth in the Word of God. Without question, the Christian home is one of the greatest gifts that God has given to mankind. It is a vital rnissioh field in which all can work. We need to consider the husband’s position in the household, and the manner in which he treats his wife so that the children might see a union truly blessed of the Lord. Thereby, when they grow up and leave home, they will be able to look back upon their past with not only pleasant memories, but also in a way which will cause them to trust the Lord at all times in the establishment of a similar unit. God has given a wonder ful recipe in the Bible as to how this is possible. In Ephesians 5:25 we find these practical words, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Men are to show to their mates the high est form of love. We should mark the fact that Christ did not love the Church merely by giving it many practical blessings and benefits. Actu ally the essence of His true expres sion was that He actually gave Him self. On this day set aside to honor moth ers, they will be receiving many cards and lovely gifts, but all of this is not the most genuine expression of affec tion. The one great thing, which makes a mother happy is to know she really has the love of her husband. The next verse suggests something further for our consideration. Christ’s purpose in loving the Church was so “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.” It goes without saying that Dr. Keiper is associate editor of ETERNITY magazine.

communication is a very important thing between a husband and a wife. Anyone can use a commercial card to bring a message on an occasion like this, however, the human heart ought to express gratitude each and every day. How do you communicate, men? Are you critical, condemning every thing you see? Do you make a judg- THE SOUL OF A CHILD The soul of a child is the loveliest flower That grows in the garden of God. Its climb is from weakness to knowl edge and power, To the sky from the clay and the clod. To beauty and sweetness it grows under care, Neglected, 'tis ragged and wild. 'Tis a plant that is tender, but won- drously rare— The sweet, wistful soul of a child! Be tender, O gardner, and give it its share Of moisture, of warmth, and of light. And let it not lack for thy painstaking care To protect it from frost and from blight. A glad day will come when its bloom shall unfold, It will seem that an angel has smiled, Reflecting a beauty and sweetness untold In the sensitive soul of a child. ment so that your wife feels inferior? We never find that the Lord Jesus ever did this to the Church. His pur pose is to cleanse and to sanctify it, presenting it to Himself without spot or wrinkle. As husbands, this is what God wants you and me to do as far as our wives are concerned. One good way for a child to see his mother very 19
