Masterpiece Cane Auction 2026

49. Silver English Bulldog Cane

Ca. 1890 Small and gracious, the silver handle is expertly crafted in a minimalist L-shape, characterized by a longer vertical stem that extends outward at an angle. The design is complemented by a lateral brow that adds depth and sophistication, ultimately culminating in a strikingly detailed English Bulldog head. The modeling is naturalistic and brilliantly captures the broad head with a short muzzle, rope-roll folds above the nose, drooping lips, and pointed teeth, and an underbite with an upturned jaw. Tiny, deep red, precious-stone round eyes are set under thick folds of skin on the brow, making them a focal point of the design. They are flanked by a pair of ears that are down and turned inwards. Here, the interplay of various elements creates a harmonious balance that elegantly blends simplicity with intricate artistry. This thoughtful combination enhances the handle's aesthetic appeal, transforming it into a profound tribute to the love shared between humans and their canine companions. Each curve and detail of the portrait reflects a deep appreciation for dogs, resulting in a functional and richly expressive piece of affection. The handle features two Austrian hallmarks, likely for Vienna, along with a Ger- man “Half Moon and Crown” mark for silver, indicating official import to Ger- many. It comes on a high-quality, slender ebony shaft with an applied silver escutcheon, elegantly engraved with flowery initials and a brass ferrule. Although this cane may not be flashy, it carries a unique spirit and character that resonate deeply, weaving into the fabric of what cane collectors admire and hold dear. Despite its delicate nature, it has withstood the test of time, marked by superfi- cial signs of aging that enhance its appeal without diminishing its value. H. 3 ¼” x 2”, O.L. 36”

Predestined to become a perennial favorite motif for the figural cane handle, the different breeds offered an endless variety. Businesses that promoted emo- tional connections to the portrayed dog also contributed to the expansion of this selection and the emergence of trendy breeds. Unsurprisingly, the taste of the representations varied by country, as different nations fiercely competed to establish their fashion standards.
