Masterpiece Cane Auction 2026

Burls produce a very unique and highly figured wood, valued for its beauty and rarity. It is sought after by furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors. A burl forms when a tree experiences some form of stress. An injury, virus, or fungus may cause this. Most burls grow beneath the ground, attached to the roots as a kind of abnor- mality that is usually not discovered until the tree dies or falls. There are several well-known types of burls from specific species. These are highly prized and sliced into veneers for furniture, inlays in doors, picture frames, automobile interior panels and trim, musical instruments, and woodturning. They are rarely found in canes because they are bulbous, grow spongy, and do not meet the strength requirements for cane shafts.
