Masterpiece Cane Auction 2026

6. Silver and Enamel Dress Cane Ca. 1900 Large and very tall Sterling Silver knob crafted in an ornate trumpet shape with a flat, round top, fully engine-turned and enameled in Russian Green. The simple, sturdy tapering body features a repeating millegrain pattern, while the widening, flat top displays a shield design with a feathery, radiating, broader stripe, surrounding a central round shield with a wavy, paired pattern. Two broad circular lines of opaque white enamel emphasize the shining effect of engine turning and translucent enamel. At the same time, a small, hand-chased, and engraved silver frame featuring a cross-band and buds design protects it. A well-figured and richly hued snake wood shaft, king of all woods and ultimate luxury, and a brass ferrule adorn the knob. An absolute masterpiece of artistry and re- fined taste, with plenty of substance for the connoisseur, this cane exemplifies the art of enameling. It showcases the craftsmanship of those who made and wore it. In all its majestic splendor, it has the power to ele- vate its bearer to a level of magnificence, surpassing even its own, captivating every- one from seasoned collectors to the culturally curious. Creating translucent hard enamel requires the utmost patience, experience, and skill. Due to its inherent fragility, very few of these exquisite knobs have survived intact, especially when the enameled object is of such a large size. The silver needs some surface polishing.
