Masterpiece Cane Auction 2026

8. Hard Stone Dress Cane

Ca. 1880 Substantial rose quartz knob wheel cut in a reversed teardrop pommel shape and presented on an extending silver collar with scrolls and foliates around a blank cartouche. The overall profile of the knob resembles hookah mouthpieces, featuring faceting with soft-edged, broad panels clustered at the top within a beautiful eight-sided Islamic geometrical octagon panel. This design reflects Ottoman taste and suggests it was a custom order from France or Switzerland for that region. Endowed with an addictive sensory feel, this “touch the difference” knob features a fully matured, blond, full-bark malacca shaft with a raised ridge and a long horn ferrule. One of only two published examples so far, this cane is an exceedingly rare relic of Ottoman culture, when Istanbul ruled an empire. It is literally a wearable treasure, endowed with a great feel of age and in superb condition. The plain surface of the knob and its soft edges made it diffi- cult for the photographer to capture its essence. It must be observed in nature to fully appreciate its beauty and held in hand to enjoy its soothing feel. H. 4” x 1 ¾”, O.L. 36 ½”

$800-$1,000

There have been a significant number of publications on Ottoman art that illustrate utilitarian objects, mainly hookah mouthpieces with comparable profiles from the Topkapı Sarayı Palace Museum in Istanbul. Rose quartz is believed to balance emotions, providing inner peace and harmony. It helps activate sensitivity to beauty, art, and music. It is thought to calm aggression and resentment while boosting self-esteem and confidence. Additionally, it enhances compassion, patience, and forgiveness. Traditionally a symbol of love and beauty, rose quartz is also believed to increase your ability to love others and yourself.
