44. KPM Porcelain Cane
Ca. 1820 Large and voluminous KPM, Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, porcelain handle modeled in a conventional Baroque T-shape with an elegantly formed body and asymmetrically curving ends, delicately painted in vivid colors on a white background with a different and elaborate flower arrangement on each side. Rich and flamboyant gold scrollwork emphasizes the lateral brows, which end in a longer, tapering front section with a snail-like curling tip, and a shorter, shell -shaped back part. Here, the quality of the porcelain itself, its smooth glazing, and the outstanding painting detail showcase the height of cane porcelain art. Notable is the rarely encountered and impressive oversize, which refers to the first output of the model that was laid and relayed for an entire century. The handle features a turned and gilt metal collar, a first-rate and naturally deep black ebony shaft, and a horn ferrule. This cane embodies all the essential qualities a collector could want, and it has the potential to become widely recognized as a symbol of fine porcelain cane art. Despite great fragility, it survived the test of time triumphantly flawless. The handle's unique character reflects the spirit of the Romantic Era, reminiscent of the hardstone canes used by King Frederick the Great of Prussia (1712–1786). King Frederick, also known as “Friedrich II the Great” or “Der Alte Fritz” in German, was renowned for his love of music, phi- losophy, and the arts. He was renowned not only for his distinctive style but also for his rare and extraordinary collection of walking sticks, each one more remarkable than the last, with a unique cane that truly set him apart from anyone else’s collection.
