510 and girls like stories about soldiers? All of you, and so do I like those kind of stories, and I wonder what there is about soldier BEGINNERS stories that is so in- AND PRIMARY teresting. Yes, Fred, Mabel L. Merrill that is a pretty good answer, because there is always something doing and soldiers have to be brave, even though they are facing great danger. Now this morning we are going to have just the kind of a story you all like, and it is a true story from the Bible. Prayer. Besson Story: We remember last week our story told us about a new earthly king who was to rule over God’s people Israel, and today we are to learn some more about King Saul, and espe cially about his brave son the prince. The heathen people living in the coun tries near God’s people had large armies with lots of soldiers and they kept com ing to make war against the people of Israel. Because there had been so much fighting and war there were not many soldiers left among the people of Israel and hardly any weapons of war. The people were so frightened that many of them hid in caves, or behind big rocks. Jonathan was the brave prince of our story, and he was the son of King Saul. Now the heathen people who were com ing to fight Israel had a big army and lots of weapons and lots and lots of chariots, and when Israel knew this they were greatly frightened. Now Jonathan loved God and His people and he was trusting in God’s great power and strength to give victory over the big army of heathen people. When our trust is in God and we just remember that God is stronger than all the armies in, the world, the fear goes out of our hearts and we are brave to face danger. Jonathan’s faith in God had driven all fear away. In those days soldiers wore armor made of iron or brass; they car ried shields also which they held up before them while they were in battle,

THE K I N G ’ S B U S I NE S S that the arrows and darts of their ene mies might not wound them. Jonathan, Saul’s son, wore armor, and he had a soldier to carry his shield and spear for him when he did not want to use them. This soldier was called his armor bearer. Jonathan asked his armor bear er if he would go over to the camp of the enemy with him, for he said the Lord might help them to gain a vic tory over the enemy, for Jonathan be lieved in God and knew He had power over even a big army. The armor bearer said he would go. Now the men did not tell Saul the King they were going, for they knew Jonathan’s father would not want his son to face such a great danger with only his armor bearer with him. They had to climb up a very steep cliff to reach the camp of the enemy, and a few of the enemy soldiers had come out to the edge of the cliff to watch this brave young prince and his armor bearer. They were not afraid of just two men, but Jonathan and his armor bearer soon killed these men, and then the Lord took a hand in the battle, for God knew how very wicked these people were and how cruel and wicked they had been to his peo ple. The Lord made the earth shake under them, so that the whole big army of the enemy were afraid and trembled, and they were so frightened that they began to kill each other and fled. Now King Saul and the men who were with him did not know what Jonathan had done; but Saul’s watchman looked out toward the enemy camp, and saw fight ing there, and told Saul of it. Then Saul counted over his men to see which ones were gone, and he found that Jonathan and his armor bearer were missing, so Saul sent his men over to join in the battle; and many of the men who had been afraid, and had been hid ing, went along to battle also. The Lord helped the children of Israel, so that the enemy fled from them. Be cause Jonathan and his armor bearer
