CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Final Thoughts
“To help, to continually help and share: that is the sum of all knowledge.” ~ Eleanora Duse
I
wrote this book because I did it wrong. I wrote it so you, my kids, my colleagues, and people I don’t know and might never meet, won’t make the same mistakes. You don’t have to do it wrong. You can do it right. Remember way at the beginning of the book when we thought about what life would look like at age seventy-five? Right now, sitting in your chair, reading this book, it’s hard to imagine being seventy-five. It’s hard to imagine having to rely on your savings for everything you need in life: food, housing, travel, clothes. To- day, you have control: you can work harder, switch jobs, get addi- tional education and make more money. In retirement, you cede control to the choices you’ve made in your past. Choices about how to save, how much to save and when to save. Choices you’re making right now determine everything in retirement. That’s why I encourage you to be bold. To be a detective. To take an active role in planning your future rather than letting your future happen to you. To use the New Rules of Retirement Sav- ings.
