I’VE DISCOVERED A GOLD MINE! THE MAGIC WITHIN THICH NHAT HANH’S WRITINGS

Stephen King once said, “Books are a uniquely portable magic,” and how true I find this to be. This month, we celebrate Read Across America Day, a day to truly appreciate all that can be gained from reading. Reading takes us on an adventure, teaches us important life lessons, provides us with advice, and relieves stress. It’s good for our body, mind, and soul. If you’ve ever curled up

else. Within you and me are elements from the stars, and when you look at it that way, the stars are within us — how cool! We are comprised of the same DNA as our grandparents, things within nature, and more. Thich Nhat Hanh teaches us to appreciate all we are, all we can become, and where we are at this exact moment.

with a good book on a rainy afternoon, you certainly have experienced the enchantment of the written word.

And speaking of where we are at this exact moment, one of my biggest takeaways from his books is the impermanence of everything. You’ve likely heard the phrase, “This too shall pass.” Everything in life is fluid and dynamic. People change, attitudes change, and locations change. We may feel a certain way one day, and the next day, we see a shift take place. When old cells die, new ones are generated. Thich Nhat Hanh explains that we never step in the same river twice — rivers are constantly changing, and new water will always surround our feet.

One of my favorite authors of all time is Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Thien Buddhist monk, teacher, and peace activist who recently passed away. He has published more than 100 books ranging from meditation books, children’s books, self-help books, poems, and manuals that focus on mindfulness, wisdom, selflessness, opportunity, and Buddhist teachings. In his collection, there is something for everyone and much to take away from his writing.

In moments when things get tough or my children are having an argument, I take a moment to remember it won’t be like this for long — in 10 minutes, they’ll be hugging. On the flip side, when things are positive and everything feels right with the world, it’s important to never allow yourself to become too attached. Nothing is ever permanent. However, you can always do your best to appreciate the moment, be present in the here and now, and foster positive growth and change! Thich Nhat Hanh has so much to offer, and I’ve only scratched the surface.

Some of my favorite titles include “You Are Here,” “Art of Living,” and “How to Live.” While immersed in his writings, he’s helped me gain a new perspective on the simplicity and beauty of life by learning to appreciate all of the small details. Oftentimes, we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives that we forget to take a moment to observe and be grateful for something as simple as a leaf on a tree and all the life within it and how it is connected to everything else around us.

When you really take a moment to stop and think, everything we are and all we surround ourselves with is a combination of everything

DO YOU WANT YOUR BUSINESS TO THRIVE? CONSIDER READING ‘GOOD TO GREAT’ BY JIM COLLINS!

approach is based on Greek philosophy: "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing."

To find your hedgehog concept, ask yourself these questions: What can your company be the best at? What can you and your colleagues be passionate about? What economic indicator should you focus on? When creating habits and using technology, you don't need to use everything on the market. There are millions of platforms, software, tools, and technologies to use within your business, but which one will strengthen your hedgehog concept? Collins suggests only implementing technology that complements your business. He recommends waiting before jumping onto a new trend, platform, media platform, and technology. Be sure it aligns with your values, goals, and hedgehog concept.

"Good is the enemy of great." This is how Jim Collins begins his book “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't,” which discusses how a handful of companies perfected their business strategies to create great businesses. If you've ever wondered why some businesses only last a season while others last 15–20 years, then “Good to Great” is a must-read. Over the past three decades, Collins has analyzed 28 businesses by studying their leadership skills, practices, and business strategies to understand how these companies skyrocketed past their competitors. After conducting dozens of case studies and analyses, Collins outlines several results that make excellent companies stand out. Here are three takeaways from “Good to Great.”

What do you do when your business is faced with uncomfortable situations, facts, or data? Great companies and business leaders don't sweep hard facts under the rug and deny them. However, leaders don't wave the white flag or give up. Instead, great companies and business owners acknowledge hard facts, identify pain points, and implement strategies to help overcome struggles and strengthen abilities.

Along with learning tips and strategies from these three lessons, you will also have a chance to learn more about Collins' case studies, what companies he studied, and the techniques used to create business powerhouses. You can find “Good to Great” online and anywhere books are sold. Happy reading!

The first key takeaway is determining your "hedgehog concept" — a strategy you can use for many years. This
