extended this work by linking theuse of specific techniques to gains in insight and subsequent improvement in interpersonal functioning (6). These findings are consistent with the clinical theory that insight may be a specific mechanism of change in dynamic therapy. It should be noted, however, that the association between insight and outcome cannot be experimentally controlled. The true causal mechanism of change could be some unknown variable correlated with insight. This is an inevitable limitation, to date, in mediator studies. G$#.1/.\!
