SYNTERO PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS TO SUPPORT YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH
Mindfulness is the simple practice of bringing a gentle, accepting attitude to the present moment. Mindfulness can help promote overall health and wellness by relieving stress, lowering blood pressure, improving sleep and reducing feelings of anxiety for people of all ages. The best part about mindfulness is that you can practice it virtually wherever you can focus on the present moment while acknowledging your thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. The following simple steps can help you begin your mindfulness practice: • Set a time limit: A short time limit, such as 5 or 10 minutes, can help you gradually improve your focus. As you get deeper into your practice, you can add more time or forego a specific time limit. • Pay attention: It’s hard to slow down and notice things in a busy world. Try to experience your environment with all your senses—touch, sound, sight, smell and taste. For example, when you eat a favorite food, take time to smell, taste and truly enjoy it. • Focus on your breathing: Focus on your breath as it moves in and out of your body. If your mind wanders, gradually return your attention to your breath. • Live in the moment: Mindfulness does not have to be limited to a set timeframe. Try to intentionally bring open, accepting pleasures!
