VANKLEEK HILL | Early Tuesday morning, balloonist Sandra Rolfe took off in a hot air balloon successfully beating the current record of seven hours and a few minutes. “We were successful on today’s flight for a new world record,” said Bill Whelan, Rolfe’s teammate and balloon builder. “We only made it by just over 20 minutes as we were heading toward a large wooded area.” Rolfe currently holds 28 Canadian bal- looning records in altitude, distance and duration, and two world ballooning records in distance, and duration. Tuesday’s record breaker brings her up to 31 records in total. Whelan kept track of her on the ground as she floated through the air in her balloon, doing what most grandmothers wouldn’t even think of. Whelan built the balloon spe- cifically for this record attempt in his shop called the Lighten Up Balloon Company, in Vankleek Hill. The balloon was put together in Pleasant Corners Public School. “The Bal- loon is a 31,000 cubic foot envelope with a weight of less than 70 pounds. The average AX7 balloon that one may see flying in this area weighs approximately 200 pounds.” “Records in balloon are obtainable in three categories: altitude, distance and duration,” explained Whelan. “Then, there are sub class, for different size balloons. It would be easy for a very large balloon to stay aloft for a long time, as the lift is great. In a small balloon, the lift is limited to only a few hundred pounds, so we must try and build a balloon as light as possible so we can add more fuel.”
