AMBA's Ambition magazine: Issue 56, September 2022

Finally, a question we ask everyone: do you feel optimistic about the future of business, Business Schools, and the economy? This is a tough one to answer at the moment. It is a particularly challenging time, but an effective leader is about being adaptable and leading people through a storm, and making a difference along the way. The world may look different at the end of all this, but we will come through these challenges. Responsible, authentic management and leadership will always be needed.

This approach gives students the opportunity to test out what they are learning in the classroom, and put into practice frameworks that will shape their careers for years to come. What innovations are your School currently developing to future-proof its postgraduate business programmes? We are currently investigating options for alternative modes of delivering postgraduate programmes, and are exploring the lifelong learning agenda across the UK and internationally. As an established and ambitious international Management School, we place a lot of value in our relationships

with international partners and will be looking to take these further. Lancaster University now has campuses in China, Germany, Ghana and Malaysia in addition to multiple research partnerships across Europe – including Vilnius University in Lithuania and Rotterdam School of Management in the Netherlands. And what are the next steps for yourself as a Business School leader? To build on our School (which is already strong, but to make it even better) and to deliver on LUMS’ ambition to be known globally as a responsible, collaborative Management School that changes lives by tackling the most pressing issues facing society.

Claire Leitch was appointed Executive Dean of Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) in May 2022. Previously, she was Deputy Dean and Associate Dean at LUMS, and was responsible for leading the School’s successful Athena Swan submission, which was awarded in May 2021. Claire is an international scholar in gender and leadership in entrepreneurial contexts and is leading a major EU project addressing gender inequality in Business Schools, positioning Lancaster at the heart of shaping the European EDI agenda.
