ccording to Dan Rather, “[Learning] begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called ‘truth.’” Mine began with this tugging, pushing, leading and poking. It was back in 2002, my first year at the Aurora National Science High School, when I met that teacher, Mr. Villaros. It was ironic that he became my Pilipino instructor when he was supposed to be teaching mathematics, his expertise. Of the few teachers in our school, he was the most unpopular. One of the reasons perhaps was that, unlike most of our teachers, he was not an alumnus of our school. He graduated as a parochial scholar from a Catholic school in Quezon City, although he was originally from Infanta, Quezon. His parents could not send him to college, so he grabbed the
