he colorful life that Papa led can only be described in terms of snapshots or anecdotes that, taken together, form a picture of the whole. Let me piece together for you, from my viewing lenses as his daughter, that picture of Papa. In the vignettes, the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) also comes to the fore, because the story of TIP is also the story of Papa, who devoted his entire life to the school. It is a story of the grit and determination of its founder, Engr. Demetrio A. Quirino Jr., my father, my teacher. Back in 1962, when he was 37 years old, Papa Deming founded TIP—with meager resources, against all odds, against the good advice of well-meaning friends and relatives. From a small rented space in a building to a bigger, also rented, school site, the enrollment of the school steadily grew. The going was rough and difficult but he was tough and persevering, he was not one to be daunted. And so, one stone at a time, the school became bigger and better.
