eminent, and contributing to the elevation of the people in a way impossible to official action. Some object to Christian missions in ignorance of their real value. We would suggest that you will use all opportunities of making yourself personally acquainted with the work they are doing, and the character of the converts. Most missions will bear looking into, and we are convinced that if you will do this, you will never afterwards condemn or belittle them .”'—The Witness (Belfast, Ireland). T he number of Jews directly affected by the war is roughly estimated as follows: Jews in the In the country. army Russia ........................... 6,200,000 210,100 Austria .......................... 1,313,687 100,000 Hungary ............. ........... 932,416 50,000 Germany ............. .......... 615,029 30,000 France ......... ....... .......... 100,000 17,000 Servia ........ ...... ...... 15,730 2,500 Belgium ............. .......... 15,000 2,600 Great Britain...... .......... 250,000 16,000 Canada ....:.................... 150,000 2,000 Australia ...................... 20,000 1,500 Morocco ............. ........... 109,712 5,000 Algeria ............... .......... 46,000 2,000 India ............................. 20,980 2,000 The total number of Jews in the world is 13,052,864, so that if we add the Jews in Turkey there are over three-quarters of the Jewish race directly involved in the present hostilities—a tremendous penalty to pay for their dispersion among the nations! It is startling to reflect that 75 per cent of the Jews are thus affected, and 60 per cent of the world’s general population are directly involved.— Miss. Rev. O n his journey back to Africa “Dan Crawford” spent four days in the Fiji isl ands. j . . A group of Christian natives came down to the wharf to see him off, sing ing, “God be with you till we meet again.“ “Down the wharf,” says Mr. Crawford, “in the moonlight there comes a yelling, bawling band of young colonials, nearly all drunk,

who have come down to sing off a depart ing ‘pal.’ They come reeling down, crowd in against the choir, yelling, ‘For He's a Jolly Good Fellow,” and all the time trying to drown even an echo of the poor native choir. But the natives said: ‘Oh, here goes for the holy war’; so louder and louder the deep voice of the ex-cannibals was heard singing my parting hymn. The opposition camp, catching up the antagonism of the thing, yelled more loudly than before their second song, which was of the vaudeville type. There you had, symbolized and ex emplified, the horrid antagonism that the Gospel meets in all these islands. If only the white man at least hid his face in shame at the memory of his mother’s God and his father’s God, the Gospel would have a better chance in these islands.”— Miss. Rev. T he business man takes it as the oppor tunity of the hour to capture South Amer ican trade. He even feels that the United States can perform a trade service in doing so, now that connections with Europe are paralyzed. The Government of our country has con ducted itself and affairs so humanely and so nobly in the war stress of the last few years, that all American enterprise will have a larger field in South America. The prot- estant Church is included in this. It has to meet the bugaboo of the opposition preaching of the “Conquista pacifica” against American missions. Now, however, Presi dent Wilson has silenced at least the sten torian proclamation of such misrepresen tation. The opportunity for evangelical teaching is expanding yet more. There is a tremendous work to be done. It should be entered upon with such determination, with such resources, and on such a scale as to claim public and national attention. Per sonal salvation to be set forth effectively, the social uplift of the Gospel to be exempli fied, educational work on a scale to be a power, the formation of a Christian liter ature, all require many capable men and women and ample resources.
