Dispute resolved at Place Mont Roc retirement home RICHARD MAHONEY richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca under an expired collective agreement for more than 18 months.
io Labour Relations Board. “We have an agreement in place. Every- thing has been resolved,” said Frank Zam- bito, owner of the Spence Avenue facility. Under the pact ratified by union mem- bers Tuesday, employees were given the choice of accepting a severance package or remaining at the home as full-time or part- time employees. Four members accepted the severance deal, which provides one week of pay per year of service, to a maxi- mum of 26 weeks plus $1,000. The union had represented 24 people at the residence before the changes were implemented.
“This has worked out pretty good,” said Jalbert, noting that members gained more through the negotiated settlement than they would have if the dispute had gone to arbitration. “This is a fresh start.” The impasse became public in January when the union complained that planned staff cuts might jeopardize the safety of the 67 residents at the home, where two senior citizens died in a 2012 fire. Sprinklers were later installed in the facil- ity, which were not required by law at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire has not been released. Staff at the residence had been working
Un employé est arrêté pour vol The Sûrété du Québec is investigat- ing a suspicious early-morning fire that destroyed a $1.5 million home in Har- rington Township Tuesday. The owners of the house on Chemin Lac Harrington East were absent at the time of the blaze, which was spotted at about 2:20 a.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found that someone had broken into the garage, where they found two empty gasoline cans.
