AfriLabs Update - September_

After COVID-19 outbreak, the African Union in collaboration with UNDP and AfriLabs worked together to implement the first African business simulation that seeks to help Micro/Small/Medium Enterprises MSMEs to overcome the current COVID-19 challenges and the lockdown. More than 400 participants and 10 different partners have been involved in building and participating in the simulation in 2020 from 5 different countries: Cameroon, Egypt, Sudan Senegal, and Zimbabwe.

Watch out for AfriLabs Hubs Learning Week Series 9!

T he AfriLabs Hubs Learning week is a series of virtual capacity- building workshops under the AfriLabs Capacity Building Programme that empowers innovation hub managers and staff with requisite and formal incubation management training and skills required to start, operate and expand hubs/innovation centres in Africa. The workshops are also open to stakeholders within the African ecosystem like Government, Corporate Organizations, Developmental organizations, Venture capitalists, Angel Investors, Entrepreneurs and

individuals who want to learn about setting up innovation and creative centres in Africa. This quarter’s edition will be held from 26-30 September. It is supported by Agence Française de Développement (AFD) through the Digital Africa seed fund.

T his Physical Workshop is a training workshop where the content and curriculum of the AfriLabs Capacity Building Programme (ACBP) will be delivered physically in English and French. It is supported by Agence Française de Développement (AFD) through the Digital Africa seed fund. AfriLabs is calling on hubs within the AfriLabs network and newly established hubs outside the AfriLabs networktoapplyasparticipantsforthe Physical Workshops. In this edition, 50 participating hubs across Africa will be selected via a competitive application and screening process targeting hubs that have incubated at least 1 complete cohort of start- ups and have operated for at least 6 months, following AfriLabs network membership criteria. The workshops will take place in 10 different African cities with the first happening in Lusaka, Zambia in October (before the AfriLabs Annual Gathering). The Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) is jointly implementing the Youth Adaptation Solutions Challenge (YouthADAPT) under a strategic partnership program called the African Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP). The challenge supports young African innovators keen on making a change via an innovative business idea that can drive climate change adaptation and resilience across Africa. Winners will receive $100,000 each in grants to support their innovations alongside other forms of support.

Unveiling the candidates for the upcoming AfriLabs board elections

Community review of the updated AfriLabs constitution ahead of the AfriLabs Annual General Meeting T he Constitution Committee has recently updated the AfriLabs community’s constitution to accommodate changes and new structures. This revised constitution will be shared with the community in the coming days for our review and as adoption of the new constitution will be done at the AGM in October at Lusaka Zambia.
