Weathering THE STORM

CEO’S COLUMN

Andrew Main Wilson celebrates a landmark occasion and offers some sage advice on how to navigate these uncertain times

 Resist the temptation to increase prices any more than you absolutely must. Reassure customers that you will continue to offer value for money and will make a conscientious effort to keep price rises to a minimum.  Strike the right balance between staff working from home and working from your offices. I believe it could prove a fatal mistake to reduce real estate costs by hoping that staff working entirely from home will not adversely impact company culture and teamwork. A blended mix of working from home and in the office is, in my opinion, the optimum solution. Finally, I believe that there is no such thing as a static organisation. You’re either going forwards, or you’re going backwards. If you think you are static and simply maintaining the status quo, you’re almost certainly going backwards, but don’t actually realise it. Great organisations continue to strive for growth and quality improvement, however difficult the global challenges seem to be.

 Diversify your organisation globally, as much as possible, to keep all your geographical expansion options open  Try and ensure that no one market or country accounts for more than 10 per cent of your total revenue  It’s more important than ever to look after your staff. Reassure them in these uncertain times and look after your talent as best you can. As a result of our record year in 2022, we have just paid our highest-ever, all-staff annual bonus, which has been gratefully appreciated at a time when the cost of living is significantly increasing.  In such uncertain times, it’s all too easy to get bogged down with stress and concerns, so focus only on what you can influence in your life and the lives of your staff. A strong business performance can protect your organisation and improve your employees’ job security and career growth opportunities. Job security will prove a significant safe harbour during this global geopolitical and economic storm.

he 8th of November is a milestone day for us at AMBA & BGA – it’s our 55th anniversary. I strongly believe you should mark these kinds of milestones with

your staff, as we also celebrate relocating to our spectacular, new global headquarters in the heart of London. As we enjoy our anniversary, I’m mindful that we have just completed two years of record growth and we have huge ambition for further growth and success for both AMBA and BGA. Our ambitions are slightly tempered by the harsh reality of what could be, economically and geopolitically, the most difficult year for many of us worldwide, since the Second World War. Nevertheless, we shall continue to expand AMBA to 300 accredited schools and BGA to 300 member schools, many of which will progress to full accreditation. As I reflect on the challenges in front of us, I have drawn up a list of six key recommendations to protect and grow businesses during a period of such global uncertainty.
