WELCOME TO THE 2025 LITTILE BITTERROOT RANCH & LAIRD SIMMENTAL PRODUCTION SALE! WE thank the Lairds for joining us in offering a bigger volume and broader base for customer selection needs. With our ranches being further in distance it makes it more challenging to manage and feed the bulls identically. I think our visions to produce sound functional Simmental and Sim/Angus are quite similar. This means good feet and legs, easy fleshing, docile females with problem free udders and longevity with much more. Breeding improvement for carcass quality and premium on the rail is a bonus which we have strived for without sacrificing the maternal for the terminal values. We are not focused on the extremes but do love the extra performance and value the Simmental breed offers over the straight breed cattle. Heterosis is a gift to improve the bottom line. Balance trait selection is the goal. We are to count our blessings and to have a thankful heart. After Marilynn’s back surgery last year, she hasn’t been able to touch her toes as easily, but she is not under constant pain. We can be thankful after 57 years of raising cattle, we can still care for our Simmental cows. Being able to do what you love is very rewarding. In looking at the world with wars and rumors of wars it makes one feel alarmed. We are thankful for not fighting war on our own soil. It seems like we are in times of increasing troubles. Each generation has its own challenges. I will use Lester Holts message to the Media. “Take care of yourselves and each other.” Thinking of our own self above others leads to trouble but living with the perspective “It is more blessed to give than receive,” can be a gift to others and a fulfillment of the heart. This year LBR will offer one donor, 14 bred cows, 3 bred heifers, and 12 open heifers along with 30 bulls. The females have been selected from the heart of our herd. We didn’t want them to be calving during the sale, so the bred cows and heifers were chosen from the ultrasound calving date. The elite Guardian donor has been flushed twice and kept open for the new owner. All females will need to be taken home after the sale. In the LBR bull group there will be 8 embryo transplant bulls with the rest sired by AI. All bulls are Homo Polled. Lot 13 M811 is Hetero Black and Lot 26 M929 is Red; the rest are all Homo Black. The two older bulls were used as herd sires in LBR’s program. They had limited use as clean up bulls after AI. We guarantee them to be free of any transmittable diseases. There are also 2 fall age advantaged ET bulls that were raised at a cooperator herd. They have the same quality genetics as the 4 spring bull siblings, but they will have smaller weaning and yearling weights. First of all, we would like to thank Frank and Marilynn Carr for inviting us to their annual production sale; we are honored to offer some of our genetics alongside theirs on February 4, 2025. 2024 was a great grass year for us as we acquired some new lease ground and the bulls were weaned in late October with some of the best weaning weights we have ever had. Our calving season starts mid-March-April to match our spring turnout grass so our calves will be younger and a little greener for pictures and video. On November 1st the bulls were worked up to 8#’s of concentrate plus free choice alfalfa/grass hay and are gaining well. Our operation is located in southeast Idaho offering industry-leading performance Simmental and SimAngus genetics. Our breeding program is focused on producing functional cattle with added growth and carcass quality. With the use of embryo transfer, AI, genomics, cross- breeding and epds, we strive to provide profitable genetics for our customers. Rob and Ted have 60+ years of combined experience in the livestock industry. Ted cowboying and training horses on some of the biggest cow outfits in the West, and Rob serving as manager on several prominent registered operations throughout the country. We believe cattle production is both an art and a science and strive to produce cattle with added pounds, improved carcass quality, and good dispositions through genetics and management. Bulls are all homo polled and homo black except Lot 13 is Hetero Black and Lot 26 is Red. Bulls are free from any defective genes. LBR RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST & SCROTAL We would like to reserve the right to collect 100 units of semen for in herd use at seller’s expense and buyer’s convenience on any LBR bull. Scrotal measurements were taken on December 9, 2024. An added adjustment of .033 for every day short of 1 year old, which is right at 1 cm for 30 days. The fall bulls were measured on the same day with no age adjustment. LBR FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE All bulls returning to the ranch will be fertility tested and guaranteed to be ready for breeding before delivery. Little Bitterroot Ranch and Laird Simmentals will cover 50% of any bull injured during their first breeding season of 90 days after first turn out. 50% of injured bulls value will be credited on a bull in future sales or a replacement bull if available. We do guarantee our cattle to be healthy sale day and until delivered in April. LBR FEEDING AND DELIVERY A $200 credit will be given for bulls taken home sale day. Bulls will be fed free of charge until delivery date of around April 1, 2025. There will be a $3.00 per day per head charge for late delivery. Bulls will be delivered free of charge up to 500 miles from the ranch. The summer was very dry, and we ran out of grass early so bulls were weaned and put on feed. Even though it was dry, we do not creep feed our animals and interfere with their true weaning weight potential. They were worked up to 10# Bull Developer 14.5 protein plus fee choice grass alfalfa hay per day. The expected daily gain was projected to be around 3.50/day. The yearling bulls were well above that at 4.08/day and the 2-age advantage fall bulls gained 4.76/ day. For the first 81 days on feed. Some of the extra gain very likely could be some compensatory growth. We believe the extra power genetics to perform are real. We plan to keep the bulls on that 10# developer ration until Feb. 1st. After the sale we will feed them 5# concentrate plus hay. In preparation to properly manage yearling bulls, we will gradually reduce the amount of concentrate. Three weeks prior to delivery in April the bulls will be on straight hay. The 2 fall bulls are ET calves and were raised by a cooperator herd recipient cows. The bulls had a rough environmental challenging start. They were weaned on April 24, 2024 and remained in our care after that. They were fed hay until May 30th then put on grass until August 28th.

One of the top performance bulls this year, with the 2nd highest adjusted weaning weight and top yearling weight. Respectable calving ease, growth, maternal, and end product numbers. An Honor sired bull with ranking 60 percent in docility. With his docile dam and his own disposition, I would rank him a lot higher in that DNA category.

An excellent numbered bull. Fourteen EPDs ranking in top 25% or better. His maternal brother last year was the $9000, 2nd highest in the 2024 sale. Cow family carries the docility gene for many generations. Dam as a 3-year-old has brought in the herd building kind both years.

We had 4 spring born siblings and 2 fall born age advantaged 2023 siblings out of H78 donor. LBR Honey Special H78 produced 47 embryos in the flush to Honor. This 6.4 frame sib should sire those long growthy pound making calves. Honor is ABS’s four star calving ease and 3 star carcass merit sire along with power, muscle shape, depth, and softness. With this bulls’ 404# adjusted weaning weight it might lead you to wonder about this one. He was raised on a two year old heifer that didn’t milk very well. His EPDs have more positive numbers than any of the other siblings. He could very likely be the sleeper of the group.
L13 and L25 were raised by a cooperator herd. The adjusted weaning weights are much lower than the spring sibs. We believe the same quality genetics are still there. I would go by the genomic enhanced EPDs which are more reliable than their actual performance.

Here is a real sound deep sided meat wagon. His dam A301 is a 12-year-old with sound hoof quality and perfect udder which goes along with her top 1% of breed for stayability. She has produced five bulls that were the keeping kind. Genesis has really worked on her. Where she is weak, Genesis is very strong. It makes for balanced trait selection, eye appeal, soundness, and fleshing ability. Could be that go to Purebred Sire.

This Genesis sired bull caught my eye early in the spring. I thought I should keep this one for our own herd bull. We reconsidered with the hope of finding an outcross bull. M761 has the thickness carrying down deep in his rear quarter, wide top line, added heart girth and refinement in his neck. Very attractive head showing his masculinity and balance from front to rear. He could be that Genesis sired calving ease son with great stayability, docility, carcass weight, marbling, API and TI.

M936 has great EPDs with 15 at 35% or better. A full bodied 66 lb. birth weight calving ease sire that still exhibits genetics to grow. We might be interested in collecting the bull for in herd use. Excellent genetic profile with outcross pedigree on dam’s side.

This bull’s phenotype and numbers tell the story. He is the longest, tallest, and performance Genesis son. With a big scrotal, 4.54 average daily gain, 802# adjusted 205, and 1517 adjusted yearling, he is impressive.

This will be the last one out of the A305 donor cow. We flushed her to Cowboy Cut several years back and loved the docile females which milk plenty and produce sound, functional, cow making progeny. Cowboy Cut has proven through many years to sire breed increasing quality in females.
