OCTOBER 2025
Why One Night of Halloween Just Isn’t Enough COSTUMES, CANDY, AND CLOUDY SKIES
Most people celebrate Halloween once a year, but in my family, the whole month of October is Halloween. By the time the 31st rolls around, we’ve probably already celebrated it once a week, worn two or three different costumes, and attended some of the area’s best seasonal events. Clearly, I love this holiday and Bloomington in the fall. From the appropriately gloomy weather to the smiles on trick-or-treaters’ faces when they get a king-sized candy bar at our house, it all comes together to create a vibe that’s cozy, fun, and the right amount of spooky.

throughout the month. We basically have a mini-Halloween on a weekly basis until the big night. We like to kick off the festivities with a visit to the Indianapolis Zoo for their ZooBoo event, which transforms the whole space for the holiday. Right here in Bloomington, we have all kinds of Halloween events from the children’s museum to a child- friendly haunted trail

I’ll literally see people drive up, park, get their candy, and leave the neighborhood, because they know we’re going to hook them up with the best candy. It’s a lot of fun being known for that, and we always have Anthony’s Lawn Care employees stop by with their families. The Halloween love extends to my team, and we always have a good party with the staff. It’s become a tradition for us to all dress up and make a funny video as a crew, and we all look forward to it. Halloween might only pop up once on the calendar, but it will always be so much more to me. Between the weather, the costumes, the trick-or-treaters, and the sense of community, it’s a time that deserves to be celebrated as long as possible. Happy Halloween!

Halloween fits the theme of the season in the Midwest or the East Coast, where the trees lose all their leaves and look like eerie skeletons, and there’s a cold chill in the air. Not

Autumn Angling
CREATIVE PROJECTS BEFORE THE CLEAN-UP Leaf Piles Aren’t Just for Jumping
WHERE, WHEN, AND HOW TO HOOK FISH THIS FALL
As cooler temperatures, golden leaves, and holidays roll in, fall is one of the best-kept secrets in fishing. While many pack up their rods after summer, savvy anglers know autumn is when the real magic happens. Fish feed aggressively as they prepare for winter, and the crowds of people enjoying the water have thinned out. A few tweaks can level up your fishing game this season, whether you’re chasing bass, crappie, or trout. TARGET SHALLOW WATERS As temperatures drop, baitfish like shad move into the backs of creeks and embayments. Predatory fish such as bass and crappie follow, making these areas hotspots. Focus your efforts on these shallow zones to increase your catch rate. EXPERIMENT WITH DEPTHS Fall turnover can scatter fish throughout various depths. Don’t hesitate to try different depths until you locate active fish. Using a fish finder can help you identify these productive zones. FISH THROUGHOUT THE DAY Unlike summer, when fish are most active during dawn and dusk, fall fish feed more consistently throughout the
day. This allows for flexible fishing schedules without the need for early starts. FOCUS ON STRUCTURE Fish gravitate toward structures like submerged wood and rocky banks during fall. These areas provide shelter and warmth, and targeting them can lead to successful catches.
Nothing quite says fall like the trees trading in their greens for autumn’s bright red and orange leaves. Though it’s important to remove fallen leaves in your yard, before you rake them away or contact us, why not have a little fun with the family first? Fallen foliage has real creative potential. From DIY decorations to unique art projects, we’re sharing some entertaining ways you and your kids can make the most of one of the season’s most iconic features this month. (And, when you’re ready to clean up the yard, make sure to show off your earthy art piece to the Anthony’s Lawn Care team.) PETAL PUMPKINS No yard is complete in October without a jack-o’-lantern. Pumpkin leaf bags have been a classic Halloween decoration for decades, instantly drumming up a feeling of nostalgia. These bags, featuring the face of a jack-o-lantern or other spooky characters, are available online or in many stores and are designed to make use of the leaves in your yard. Just fill them with your leaves and add them to your Halloween display. SEASONAL STAMPS Your little ones can express their artistic side and explore different shapes and colors by using fall leaves to create “stamps.” Gather flat leaves from the yard and paint the bumpy side with bright colors like yellow, blue, or orange. Press the leaf, paint side down, firmly onto paper and carefully peel it away to reveal a fun print. You can use these stamps to make fall paintings or even holiday cards to send to family and friends. AUTUMN WREATH You can add a seasonal splash of color to your entryway with a handmade wreath. This project is good for older children who will enjoy the creative challenge of weaving small, bendable sticks to create a circular base for the wreath. Once you have that made, add leaves and other decorations to create a truly unique centerpiece for your door. If your children are younger or you want to keep it simple, you can cut out a circle shape of paper or cardboard and glue handfuls of leaves to it. Once it dries, add a ribbon so you can proudly display it.
MATCH THE CATCH In fall, baitfish grow larger.
Adjust your lure size and color to mimic the prevalent forage in your fishing area. This increases the likelihood of enticing bites. EXPLORE STOCKED WATERS Many lakes and streams are stocked with trout and catfish in the fall. These fish are often eager to bite, providing excellent opportunities for anglers. UTILIZE LIVE BAIT Live bait can be particularly effective in cooler temperatures. Minnows, nightcrawlers, and shad can more effectively entice sluggish fish than artificial lures. MONITOR WATER CONDITIONS Fall often brings changes in water levels due to drawdowns. Stay informed about these conditions, as they influence fish locations and behavior.

DECK THE HALLS, NOT THE LAWN
LET’S GET YOUR YARD HOLIDAY-READY BEFORE GUESTS ARRIVE
As fall settles in and those bright autumn leaves start falling in your yard, it’s easy to let them pile up ...
lead to mold growth, cause drainage problems, and attract pests. It’s best to stay ahead of it by regularly removing leaves as they pile up. A leaf blower can make the process go quicker, but you can also do it by hand. Don’t forget to also check your gutters, as leaves can often accumulate there and cause clogs that could lead to water damage. As part of our fall cleanup, we can rid your entire property of this pesky foliage or offer a curbside pick-up service to vacuum up your piles. LAWN CARE Though your lawn may already be slowing down as we get closer to the winter months, you should continue to mow it. As long as it’s still growing, it needs maintenance. Mowing protects your yard from diseases and encourages better root development. Cutting it too short could expose the roots to colder weather and even lead to significant thinning. But, if you let it grow too long, it not only looks shaggy but can also cause the overall health of your yard to suffer. We can cut out the guesswork and ensure your lawn is ready for guests and the colder months ahead. The holidays are all about great food, connection, and spending quality time with the people you love. Our fall cleanup can take yard work off your plate so you can focus on what matters most — the tasty turkey on your plate. Contact us today.

Haunted Horizons A Halloween Travel Trio
DETOUR TO DRACULA’S DEN From the classic 1922 film “Nosferatu” to the Francis Ford Coppola-directed cinematic masterpiece “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” that premiered 70 years later, our cultural interest in vampires has spanned decades — and, in the case of Transylvania, Romania, centuries . Anyone with a passport and a desire to catch a glimpse at the real-world aesthetic that helped define the image of Dracula and other distinctive undead characters should visit Bran Castle, an amazing monument of Gothic architecture and the long-rumored residence of infamous 15th century-era prince and mass murderer Vlad the Impaler — widely believed to be the real-life inspiration behind the Dracula character. While many of the legends associated with Transylvania may be more fiction than fact, the locale remains the go-to spot for anyone with an affinity for apparitions.
