Out of

the weeds

nouvelles@eap.on.ca

L’O RIGNAL

Noxious weeds are forcing the

Prescott-Russell roads department to

spray rather than cut unwanted roadside

vegetation.

Some department employees have

developed allegoric reactions to weeds

such as wild parsnip and giant hogweed,

public works department head Marc

Clermont recently told a committee.

Tenders are to be called on the spraying

program to be carried out for a total of 46

kilometres.

County officials are talking with

environment ministry representatives to

ensure the measures meet provincial

norms.

Contracts

The counties have awarded some large

road maintenance contracts.

A “hot mix” paving contract has been

awarded to Coco Paving for $1,971,978,

the lowest of four tenders received on the

job.

Miller Paving’s bid of $232,820 was the

lowest of four submitted on a “cold in-

place recycling” job.

Western Signs &Line Painting has been

awarded a $190,341 line-painting

contract. This sum includes work in

Hawkesbury, East Hawkesbury and The

Nation.

County slams SPCA

The united counties council of Prescott-

Russell has supported the Ontario

Federation of Agriculture’s ongoing

campaign against the Society for the

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Council has endorsed an agricultural

advisor y committee recommendation to

back the Prescott and Russell OFA

branches’ condemnation of the SPCA. The

farm groups charge that the SPCA has

unfettered authority when it comes to

entering farms where animal abuse is

suspected.
