BEGINNING TO INTERMEDIATE WHEEL Never tried the wheel, or it’s been a while? This is the class for you! All the basics of throwing and glazing will be covered in this class. This class is accessible for beginners and still challenging for continuing and intermediate throwers. Work with your instructor to increase your skill level in throwing as well as learn how to decorate your pieces using slips, stains, and more! Please note this class is from 6:00-8:30 pm. This fall, we’ll explore both functional and decorative forms that capture the essence of autumn-think lidded jars, serving platters, soup bowls, generously sized mugs for those chilly days ahead. Our surface decoration and glazing techniques will be inspired by rustic texture and autumnal colors. We’ll incorporate handbuilding techniques to add variety and interest to your pieces. While prior experience on the wheel (wedging, centering, pulling walls) is required, no handbuilding experience is necessary. CONTEMPORARY TERRA SIGILLATA WORKSHOP: LOW-FIRE, CONE 6, PIT/SMOKE FIRING Explore Terra Sigillata and its versatility as a surface enhancement on your ceramic pieces. In this one-day intensive, you’ll explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to Terra Sigillata. We’ll cover how to formulate Terra Sigillata, its historical roots, reasons for using, and current uses at low fire and Cone 6. This workshop also introduces pit/barrel firing processes, with an opportunity to have your work fired in the following weeks. Whether you’re new to Terra Sigillata or looking to expand your surface techniques, this workshop offers a blend of history, chemistry, and creativity. Participants should bring four bone-dry pieces (Cone 04 or Cone 6), each no larger than six inches.
