Ensemble

It’s time to pull back the curtains on the new Ensemble collection by Robert Oxley. This showstopping selection of original and limited edition works captures his childhood memories of Jim Henson’s iconic TV series, The Muppet Show , which first aired in 1976. The unique personalities of each character – from Miss Piggy’s diva-like tantrums to Fozzie Bear’s comedic quips – are celebrated in full colour. As individual performers, they shine, but as an ensemble they are unstoppable. Robert adds: “These Muppets are great as a collection. I knew I had to choose the main players: Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Animal. I’ve taken some well-loved characters and given them a new feel; maybe a little weird, definitely different, very much recognisable and well-loved.” Kinship is a recurrent theme in Robert’s work, with the contemporary painter often illustrating the unity of the animal kingdom. Like his psychedelic wildlife paintings, his latest works use colour and patterns to express the traits and emotions of his subjects. Animal’s jagged lines encapsulate his unapologetic

mayhem, while Gonzo’s eccentric suit symbolises his pride in his uniqueness. Each of the artworks’ titles is taken from a Hollywood film that reflects the personality or story of the character. “The Muppets were a much-loved part of my childhood,” says Robert. “They were on TV on a Sunday evening, and I remember wishing The Muppet Show would never end, because as soon as it did it was bedtime, ready for a week of school. It’s been great to revisit childhood memories. It’s fun to remember, isn’t it?” Originally painted in oils, the limited edition prints have been faithfully recreated on boxed canvas and hand-varnished by our specialist atelier team. Signed by Robert, they are available individually or as a set of five. Contact us to find out more.
