ship with Him. Nothing can dim or cool the love of the Lord for His own; “having loved his own, he loves them unto the end.” Peter was a greater man of faith after this than he ever was before. Even then the disciples were slow to be lieve the word of the angel, and they there fore hesitated to tell the other disciples. III. T he A ppearance of the L ord (9-11). It was a personal appearance. Mary ac tually saw the Lord clothed in flesh and standing before her,. In spite of her thought that He had gone from her for ever, her heart of love would not permit her to leave the place where His body had been laid. And as she persisted in remain ing near that tomb, the Lord suddenly ap peared before her. This was enough for her. She imme diately departed to spread the glad news among the other disciples. She found them mourning and weeping when they should have been singing and rejoicing. Their faith was not equal to resting in His naked word. Hence they were cast down and dis tressed. They would have been the very opposite had they not been so slow of heart to believe, not only what the prophets had written, but also what the Lord Himself had said to them. When Mary came and told them she had seen the risen Lord, they thought she was overwrought and mis taken. They soon however had proof for themselves as, here and there, and to dif ferent groups, He came before them eating and drinking and giving every proof that He was actually with them in the .flesh. From then on, they went out to spread abroad the news of His resurrection and the gospel which springs from that resur rection. In this lesson, we may see four common mistakes which are corrected by knowl edge of and belief in the resurrection of Jesus. First, the mistake concerning the supposed difficulties in our path. As the stone appeared to the women, so difficulties loom before us, and we wonder what can remove them. We should learn to go on with calm assurance, knowing that when we reach the difficulty, it will be removed for us. Second, the mistake concerning their grief, which was wholly unnecessary, had they listened to and believed the word

up,’’ the Revised Version says, “they saw that the stone was rolled away.” The words suggest that the removal of difficulties fol lows the “looking up.” To lift the eyes from surrounding difficulties and set them upon the One who reigns above is a sure way to have difficulties dissolved. To their sight, the stone was “very great” ; to the sight of faith, it was as nothing. Note that the stone was removed in or der to allow the disciples to go into the tomb, not to allow the Lord to get out The mistake the women made was in not heeding the word of the Lord, then in dis believing that word, and finally in forget ting that word. This brought sorrow to their hearts and anxiety to their service. But their love was undimmed, and because of this, they were given the message which brought assurance to their hearts. But it was love without faith, which is the way of ignorance; and it was zeal without knowl edge, which is the way of useless and futile worry. II. T he M essage o f the A ngel (5-8). The angel’s message was very definite (vs. 5, 6). When the disciples entered the sepulchre, they saw the young man, who from other accounts we know was an an gel, sitting there. They were affrighted, but he immediately calmed them by saying, “Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here.” This would assure them in their fear, and com fort them in their sorrow. “He was cruci fied, he is risen.” This should have re minded them of the Lord’s promise that He would rise from the dead. Just as the angel was right when speak ing of the literal birth of the Lord, so, too, the angel was right when he spoke of the literal resurrection. It was not simply an ideal which came forth from that tomb, not some spirit of Christ which should trans form the world, but a literal physical body had left the realm of death and came forth never more to see death. It is this risen Christ from whom we now derive our life, to whom we look for our sustenance, and for whom we watch and wait. The resurrection of the Lord brings the end of defeat, the relief of distress, and the removal of:all doubts. It should be noted how the angel speaks of the Lord in this sentence. His humanity is there; He is “Jesus of Nazareth”—“Nazareth”—a place which bore a sinister reputation; it was a byword for sinfulness. In such a place did Jesus live, and from such a place He came to His ministry on earth. Then the angel speaks of His passion: “Which was cruci fied.” Crucified as an outcast, despised and rejected by His own! Then immediately the angel says, “He is risen.” The resur rection glorified the humanity and made it higher than the angels. Without the resur rection, Jesus is as He was, and He ever will be “lower than the angels,” and there fore our “faith is vain.” Without the resur rection, Jesus is still “of Nazareth,” and therefore our “preaching is vain.” And without the resurrection, Jesus is still the outcast, despised, and rejected One, and therefore we “are yet in our sins.” The angel then gave the disciples instruc tions to tell of this resurrection and to go into Galilee where they would see the risen Lord. There is a wonderful touch of sym pathy and love in the words, “Tell his dis ciples, and Peter.”' Peter, who had denied his Lord with frightful oaths and curses, was still upon the heart of the Lord, be loved as much as ever he was. While we know Peter’s heart was sore because of his denial, the heart of the Lord was also lonely while Peter remained out of fellow
