the sacred pilgrimage there, falls “the shadow of the cross.” “Let him take up his cross daily, and follow me.” And yet, the Lord’s blessing is hidden in the apparent curse. In the act of bearing the cross, we increase our strength. That is the heartening paradox of grace. Vir tuous energies pass from our very burdens into our spirits, and thus “out of the eater comes forth meat.” We bravely shoulder our load, and lo I a mystic breath visits the heart, and a strange facility attends our goings! The dead cross becomes a tree of life, and a secret vitality renews our souls. • II. JoWKTT. APRIL 20 “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, 0 Lord" (Lk. 5:8). One great power of sin is that it blinds men so that they do not recognize its true character. Even the Christian himself finds an excuse in the thought that he can never be perfect, and that daily sin is neces sary. He is so accustomed to the thought of sinning that he has almost lost the power and ability to mourn over sin. And yet there can be no real progress ip grace apart from an increased consciousness of sin and guilt.— A ndrew M urray .

APRIL 17 “I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears" (Psa. 34:4 ) . Under our Lord’s guidance, and with His aid, a way of deliverance from all evils is ever open to us. If we have failed to realize it, let us ask ourselves how far we have appealed to Him with the faith which is exhibited in those examples of His sav ing power which St. Matthew brings be fore us. The rule of His working has ever been, “As thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.” All things—all things necessary for our spiritual health, and for our physical wel fare also, so far as the latter is compatible with the former—-are still, as ever, possible to him that believeth; and let us pray, at the conclusion of such meditations, “Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief.” —D ean W ace . O for a faith that will not shrink, Though pressed by every foe, That will not tremble on the brink Of any earthly foe. Lord, give us such a faith as this, And then, whate’er may come, We’ll taste e’en here the hallowed bliss Of an eternal home, H. B athurst .

APRIL 18 "Thou wilt light my lamp: the Lord my God will lighten my darkness” (Psa. 18:28, R. If I had lost my way in London, I should inquire of the first person I met. Here we are lost in this dark wilderness, and do not know the way to our Father’s mansion. Surely, then, we should inquire the way.— T). L. M oody . The full direction, for Christian life and service is in the Person of His Son, and He has made in Him every provision for the living of the Christian life. And that life can only be lived, and that work can only be done, as we go by the direction of God’s Word, and use the provision that He has made, which is offered to us in Christ Jesus, and made available to us in the Per son and work of the Holy Spirit. —H. J. B arker . APRIL 19 “I f any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me" (Lk. 9:23). Our Lord never bribes His disciples by promising them ways of sunny ease. He does not buy them with illicit gold. He does not put the glittering crown upon the entrance-gate, and hide the cross behind the wall. No, on the very first stage of

Make it your daily earnest prayer that God will grant you to see all sin as He sees it—black, heinous, terrible—bringing under bondage the whole human race and costing the life of the eternal Son of God. For only thus can you truly appreciate the perpetual deliverance that Calvary pro vides.— S elected . APRIL 21 “He humbled himself, and became obe dient unto death” (Phil. 2:8).
