enjoy a victory in his life to which most Christians are strangers. —R obert C. M c Q uilkin . , MAY 1 “I f we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Gal/5 :25). The moment we fulfill the clearly-re vealed conditions, that moment God fulfills His promise. Everything is conditioned upon obedience. There is no favoritism with God. The Spirit is given without re spect of persons, to those who obey, and the Spirit is retained on the same condi tions. When we get out of step, and begin to act independent of Him, we lose His presence and power, and we shall find Him waiting for us at the point where we re fused to follow. There is only one way of escape from darkness; it is by picking up the broken threads where they were drop ped, and resuming the life of obedience where it was interrupted. He who obeys the most, enjoys the most, and is used the most. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” —J. G regory M antle . MAY 2 “Ask what I shall do for thee” (2 Ki. 2:9). Elijah said to Elisha, “Is there anything you want? Don’t be afraid to ask. You seem to be very timid.” Elisha replied, “Yes, there is something I want.” “Well, don’t be afraid to ask; you shall have whatever you want.” A blank check 1 How did he fill it out? Did he ask for as much of the Spirit as Elijah had? That would have been a great thing. Talk about kings! Elijah had power over kings. Kings are in the habit of ordering their subjects around. Here was a subject who was in the habit of ordering kings around. Talk about the power of Caesar, Napoleon, Alex ander, the great generals and warriors of this earth! Why, it is nothing to the power of the man who is in communion with God. Elisha was not going to ask for a small thing. He said, “I want a double portion of thy spirit.” I can see Elijah turn round to him in surprise and say, “You have asked me a hard thing.” But he says, “If you see me when I am taken from you, you shall have it.” “Then,” says Elisha, “you’ll not get away without my seeing you.” He wanted a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, and he was determined to get it. So he took good care to see him in the chariot, and he did see him. Elisha performed twice the number of miracles that Elijah did. Jesus Christ has come down from heaven since then, and is it so wonderful to ask for the power of the Spirit? We ought to have a hundred times more power than Elijah and Elisha had,—D. L. M oody . MAY 3 “Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous” (Psa. 112:4). Sometimes such shadows overhang our path We cry we cannot walk in light so dim. O child of God, fear not, the way is safe Through deepest darkness if we walk with Him I Sometimes our spent and burdened souls have cried, “Of what avail this anguish and this pain?” Oh, sweet and tender mystery of God, There is no travail of the soul in vain! Some day, “at eventide there shall be light.”

the Friend and the Lover of our souls. So, if you and I have Him for our very own, then we do not need to fear change, for change will be progress; nor loss, for loss will be gain; nor the storm of life, which will drive us to His breast; nor the soli tude of death, for our Shepherd will be with us there. He will be “the same for ever” ; though we shall know Him more deeply. —A lexander M ac L aren . APRIL 29 "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). John the Baptist’s whole ministry was summed up in pointing Jesus out to others. Looking, he said, “Look.” His lips said it, and his life said it. His presence was always spelling out that word “look,” with his whole life—an index finger pointing to Jesus. If we might be like that! Every one of us may be, in his life, in the great unconscious influence of his presence, a clearly lettered signpost pointing men to the Master. All true service begins in personal con tact with Jesus. One cannot know Him per sonally without catching the warm conta gion of His spirit for others. And there is a fine fragrance, a gentle, soft warmth about the service that grows out of being with Him. — S. D. G ordon . APRIL 30 "Ye are of God, my little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The hunger for victory in the hearts of many Christians is one of the hopeful signs of revival. There are an increasing num ber who are dissatisfied with defeat and who are learning that a victorious life is God’s will for them. It is not given to many men to be able to understand clearly and fully the doctrine of the atonement; but it is given to every man to acknowl edge himself a sinner and to enter into the benefits of the atonement. It is not given to many Christians to understand all the Bible doctrines with regard to holiness of life; but it is the portion of every Christian to
