April-May, 1933

Somewhere these aching hearts will un derstand ; Our pain was the refining of our gold, Our darkness but the shadow of His hand I —M artha S nell N icholson . MAY 4 “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4). Faith—that most precious, priceless, di vinely wrought principle, positively de lights in being called to lean absolutely and abidingly upon the living God. But it must be the real thing. It is of little use talking about faith if the heart be a stranger to its power. Mere profession is perfectly worthless. God deals in moral realities. “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he have faith?” He does not say, “What doth it profit though a man have faith?” Blessed be God, those who, through grace, have it, know that it profits much every way. It glorifies God as noth ing else can do. It lifts the soul above the depressing influences of things seen and temporal. It tranquillizes the spirit in a most blessed manner. It enlarges the heart . . . It is faith alone that can move along the path where Jesus leads. —-S cripture T ruth . MAY 5 "In the presence of mine enemies" (Psa. 23:5). That is a very significant addition— in the presence of mine enemies. We surely are to understand by it that all around us may stand our opponents—pledged to do us harm; to cut off our supplies; to starve us out. But they cannot cut off the sup plies that come hourly from above. They cannot hinder the angel ministers who spread the table and heap it up, and then form themselves into an inner ring of de fense. They may gnash their teeth at the vanity and futility of their rage; but when God elects to feed a soul, fed that soul shall be though all hell attempt to say it nay. Yes, soul, God bids thee feast. “Eat, O beloved, yea, eat and drink abundantly.” The King doth bring thee into His ban queting house, and His banner over thee is love.—F. B. M eyer . MAY 6 “And Jesus was moved with compas sion" (Matt. 14:14). One of the greatest needs of every hu man heart is an understanding sympathy. The strongest of hearts have their lonely hours because no one here—not even their dearest—can quite enter into their soul’s needs and longings. Jesus was lonely. He desired human sympathy, but His chosen disciples did not understand. How wonderful it is, then, in the times pf deep soul need, to have One—“the God of all comfort”—that understands 1 In the person of Jesus, He has passed through! weariness, thirst, hunger, heartache, temp tation, misunderstanding, injustice, insult, shame, torture; yet He bore them all with patient, uncomplaining love. What a feel ing of security is ours to know that He who understands our trials and our in firmities and has our best interests at heart —the loving, compassionate One—-directs and controls all things in, our lives, if we let Him, and makes all things work to gether for good to them that love God I What a bulwark to lean upon! What a resting-place for weary pilgrims of the earth!— S usanne C. U mlauf . MAY 7 "Then stood up Phineas and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

LET YOUR INCOM E Shrink!

'V rOU can avoid a shrinking income, as many others have done, by placing your money in Annuity Agreements o f the American Bible Society. An Annuity Agreement is a legal contract in which the American Bible Society in return for a gift o f money ($100 or over) binds itself to pay to the holder (the holder being called an annuitant) a specified sum every year as long as the annui tant lives. These AnnuityAgreements are safe, because they are backed by the sound financial resources and business management of a trust-worthy institution whose work is indispensable to the Christian enterprise and whose annuity program has stood the test for over 80 years. An easy-to-read booklet tells you a ll about it —the rates you re ceive—how you help in making the Scriptures widely available around the earth—how a rela tive or friend may be included.
