against me and I forgive him?" (Matt. 18:21). When the Lord and Peter come together face to face in this way, you see just what Jesus Christ is. If we saw Peter only, and heard from Peter that it was possible to forgive a brother seven times, we should have said, “How very gracious that poor fisherman is; he is prepared to receive seven insults and to forgive the whole seven.” Some of us can hardly forgive once; twice would utterly exhaust u s; but Peter says, I can forgive an offending brother seven times, and he hugged the seven to his heart like a bit of heaven. Now Jesus Christ says: “I say not unto thee, Until seven times; but, until seventy times seven.” Go on forgiving. It is Christian ity. Where logic fails, patience may suc ceed.— J oseph P arker . MAY 14 "What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter" (John 13 :7). Like many other words of Christ, this saying of His has a much wider applica tion than its primary reference to Peter’s perplexity. It furnishes the key to very many of the providences of all our lives. We do not understand them at the time. . . . But we have no right to judge of our Master’s work in us or with us until it is finished. This mystery is to be ex plained. This perplexity is to be resolved into the clearness of noonday. You do not understand now because you cannot see the end; you cannot perceive the blessing and the beauty. The Master Himself knows just what He is going to bring out of each strange work of His, and therefore He is not perplexed. Then, He says that we also shall know hereafter. We shall see the cloud as it departs, glorified by the rain bow arching its dark folds. We shall see the tangles resolving into lovely grace and beauty.— J. R. M iller . Why Streams in the Desert was Written B y M rs . C harles E. C owman Letters pour into our missionary office from the four corners of the world asking for copies of Streams in the Desert. We have come in touch with thousands of dear fellow Christians, weighted with burdens too heavy to bear, to whom the daily devo tional readings have brought comfort and cheer. Many of the letters .contain such sentences as, “What led you. to compile ‘Streams’?” “Where did you find the helpful messages?” “Were you ever a great suf ferer or a shut-in?” May I take this op portunity to reply to these personal ques tions ? My beloved companion, the founder of the Oriental Missionary Society, and I had the unspeakable privilege of spending a number of years in the Orient as mission aries of the cross. It was a delightful ser vice ; but where is the missionary, possessed with a passionate passion for souls, who is able to take life easy? Twenty years of Bible Training Institute work in Japan and Korea, then five years with one hundred workers in the villages of Japan, placing the Word of God in the 10,300,000 homes of the Mikado’s Empire, seeing hundreds inquiring their way to Zion—what blessed days! In the midst of these wonderful times came the angel of pain, dressed in her somber robes. We were afar in the mountain fastnesses of Japan, engaged in evangelistic work, when one evening, like a bolt out of the blue, came the stroke that completely changed everything in our lives.
