FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT DOC HOLLIDAY
As we enter a new year filled with exciting possibilities and changes, we need to address a recent development. One of our board members has decided to resign from his position due to an upcoming surgical procedure that will require rehab, limiting his time in Tonto Verde. Dave Crowther has made the difficult decision to step down from the Board. He has been an invaluable asset to our team, using his expertise in insurance to significantly improve the coverage the club needs. Thank you, Dave, for all your hard work and dedication. Your contributions are greatly appreciated, and we wish you all the best in your recovery. The TVGC by-laws require the Board to select a member, vote on, and install that member to the Board to fill the vacant Director’s position for the remaining term of that position. This is dictated by the club’s by-laws. The current Board of Directors has acted in accordance with the by-laws and has selected a member who has been on committees, is active in the club’s events, and has shown a desire to accept the duties associated with being a board director at the club. The Board unanimously approved the selection of Bruce Ellis to fill the vacated director’s spot, and Bruce accepted. Bruce was installed as the ninth Director and will fill the rest, 2 ½ years, of the vacated term.

The deadline for submitting your information is January 17, 2025. Once the candidate slate has been selected, it will be sent to the membership for a vote by February 21, 2025. The results and the newly elected Board will be announced at the annual meeting on April 7, 2025.
Volunteering can be a rewarding experience, but it also requires dedication and effort.
Thank you for supporting the club!

It seems like the worst of our winter weather has finally arrived, as we’ve had frost delays on 5 of the last 6 mornings. Please be aware that our staff will post any frost delay and/or cart path only restriction announcements on a daily basis in the following 2 locations that are easily accessible for the membership: On a banner above the ForeTees tee sheets On the ForeTees App, under “Club News” (this should be the first announcement you see when opening the app) You can access these announcements via a computer or on the ForeTees app on your smart device. Typically we have an initial update posted by 7:10am announcing whether or not there will be a delay. The duration of the delay is usually determined by our maintenance team in the 8:00 - 8:30 time frame and we will update these online communications accordingly. Our Golf Shop Staff is happy to provide estimated tee time projections over the phone. We will always encourage you to be onsite 20 - 30 minutes in advance of your projected tee times in case other groups ahead of you cancel, creating an opportunity for us to get back on time earlier.
For the best selection of tee times, we encourage members to log on to ForeTees starting as early as 7am, 7 days in advance of play. The X’s on the tee sheets indicate that a group has a pending invite out to members and/or guests. These X’s will disappear 72 hours in advance of play. If you see a single, twosome, or threesome without any X’s in their tee time, you are welcome to join that group. It is a nice gesture to courtesy call the first player listed in the tee time as they most likely were the creators of that reservation. In the case of a Group Name being listed in the first player slot, we ask that you get in touch with the Group Leader (directory available on TontoVerde.org) to inquire about joining their game.

Have a look at the fun pace of play video that Somin created with the help from a motley crew of amateur actors.
Slow play continues to be the biggest problem in the game of golf, and it’s a challenge that we face far too often at TVGC. While there is no one cause for slow play and there’s no simple solution, we need to focus on building a culture at the Club where members take great pride in completing rounds in Time Par or better. Unfortunately, slow players tend to lack self-awareness of their worst pace of play habits. Part of improving our pace of play culture involves peers funneling well-timed feedback to slow players about the inefficient habits they witness during a round. While an entire newsletter could be written on this topic I’ll spare you that pain and leave you with my top 3 tips for improving pace of play: Start Smart – Make it a point to arrive at the tee early with your golf equipment in order, ready to play. Start with a “get ahead” mentality in an effort to build your group some margin for error. Choose to play from a set of tees that is suitable for your game. The inability to reach greens in regulation with well struck shots is a sign that a golfer is playing too much course and needs to move up a tee. 1. Divide & Conquer – Few things in golf are more painful to watch than the foursome ahead of you collectively stopping at each player’s ball while the other 3 players just watch and wait for their turn. While we understand that people want to be supportive of their playing partners, this is a pivotal time that should be utilized to start your own process for your next shot. Identifying balls, determining yardage, evaluating wind, putting your glove on and mentally honing in on a club choice are all tasks that can often be done without distracting others who are going through their pre-shot routines. 2. Pick Up Your Ball When You’re Out of a Hole – For a golfer in any group that falls behind Time Par, continuing to play a ball that isn’t going to count in the game is a selfish act that shows a lack of respect for other members in the group and on the golf course. The USGA’s GHIN system allows a player to pick up at any point and record the score that they most likely would have made. 3.

Ranch Course Conditions Recent sustained cold temperatures have driven our base Bermuda grass into full dormancy, confirming our concerns over the quality of this year’s Ranch course overseed. The current Ranch conditions, including many thin, brown areas on fairways and spots that seem both over-and under-watered are the result of several factors, including The severe three-week heat spike during the Ranch over-seed that enabled the Bermuda grass to re-establish and out-compete the rye-grass over-seed in many spots. Those spots are now browning out as the Bermuda grass goes dormant and the dormant grass doesn’t soak up any irrigation water. Our very salty irrigation water. While it’s necessary to water to keep existing rye grass alive, every irrigation cycle adds more unhealthy salt to our soil profiles. Salt build-up in the soil creates water drainage barriers, so even minimal watering results in wet spots. The 2+ year dry cycle during which we have not had a single extended rain event of 1 inch or more to flush this accumulating salt away from grass root zones. Our agronomy team is using every tool at their disposal, including aerification, sanding and applications of gypsum and organic acids to reduce the negative impact of salt build- up in the soil, but there’s only so much that can be accomplished without causing long- term negative impacts. The challenges of growing grass on our golf courses will be discussed in greater detail in an upcoming Turf Talk.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Happy New Year! Our 30th MGA season is off and running with several events already completed in November and December. Our January Game Day Event was enjoyed by 92 players with good weather, fun golf on our beautiful Ranch Course followed by a great Italian Buffet along with a surprise at each players place setting. The scores for the majority of the field were very close with David Amundson, Tom Stupek, Robb Wolken and John Haines winning first place honors with a solid 10 under par. Quint Rowley, Keith Tharp, Pete Demma and Bruce Amborn secured second place with 9 under par. You can see all of the results and the payouts on our members website under the “Results” tab. Be sure to post all of your scores. The Handicap Committee has asked the MGA to help remind members of the importance of posting all your scores so that our handicaps are correct, fair and current. If you are not yet a member of the MGA and would like to join and participate in any of our events, please let me know via email and I will handle getting you added to our roster.
Spring Best Ball Event sign up is still open and has a few team and individual spots available. This event is a flighted match play event and is held on the first three Wednesdays in February. The Member 4 Member registration is open and there are also a few team and individual spots remaining. The event is a 2 day event on January 27th and January 29th. There is a dinner/meeting following golf on Wednesday January 29th and all participants are automatically registered for the dinner unless you opt out by contacting Cindi Reuvers at least 72 hours prior to the dinner. Registration for the Desert Classic Invitational is open. There is currently a waitlist but you are encouraged to register on the “waitlist”. Historically, some of the early registrants develop a conflict and drop off the list. The event is on March 20 - 22. MGA Member/Member sign up opens on January 24th and will be held on February 24th and February 26th. Both days are 12:30 shotguns and both courses will be used. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, and welcome back those travelers who ventured outside the confines of Tonto Verde. The first golf event of 2025 was very windy and of course cold, as evidenced by some of the attire our ladies wore. Although the weather didn’t cooperate, everyone had a great time.
Interclub traveled to DC Ranch on 01/06/205 where Debbie Barth’s team took 1st place. Congratulations to Debbie and her teammates. A trip to Troon GC is next on the Interclub’s schedule, which is 01/16/205. Good luck to all who participate!! LNGA’s Bring a Guest Day event is being held on 01/14/205. Putts, Pearls and Polka Dots is this year’s event theme. Everyone is encouraged to wear pearls and/or polka dots or both. UPCOMING EVENTS: LNGA Academy 01/29/25 sign-up starts on 01/21 LNGA East vs. West 02/18/25 sign- up starts on 01/28
We can’t wait to “SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES!” Sign up on Fore Tees for LNGA’s Couples Event on Tuesday, January 28! The Event is very popular as last year’s participants numbered 144!!!! The fun begins with a 2:30 p.m. shotgun, eight-person scramble on the Ranch. Dinner to follow immediately in the Cimarron Room. We welcome you and your team members to dress as your favorite movie characters. Prizes will be presented to winning teams and the closest drive to “Marilyn Monroe.”

LADY PUTTERS
You may recall the song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”; well, Tonto Verde Lady Putters do, too. Thirty one members did just that on Dec 18th when they turned out for the pre- Christmas Putting festivities imaginatively dressed in red and green. It was a glorious sunny morning with not a snowflake in sight, and Santa had lots of helpers… they upped the ante with >30% of players registering a hole-in-one….clearly the spirit of Christmas was in the air! Putting was followed by a delicious Christmas lunch and cocktails.
On Jan 8th, 53 members engaged in a “worst scramble and gimme” game, three teams were tied for 1st place, and 8 ladies scored holes-in-one. Members receive a weekly email reminder to register for putting each week (Wednesdays at 10 am) and are automatically signed up for lunch if lunch has been scheduled. For the remainder of the 2025 season, lunch will be held twice monthly, and members must notify the catering events manager, Cindi Reuvers if they don’t plan to attend. Members should also be sure to mark Feb. 12 on their calendars when TVLP celebrates Valentine's Day 2025 with a theme of “Love on the Green!” There are still four months of putting ahead in the 2025 season, so it is not too late to join Lady Putters if you want to stay active and have some fun during the winter months. If you are a golf club member, a registration form is available on ForeTees under Golf Leagues/Lady Putters; if you are not a golf club member, you can register on the Tonto Verde website (log on with your membership number and follow these steps: Select Golf Club Members/Golf Events/Lady Putters). If anyone ever needs help signing up, the Pro Shop is always available to help, as well as Lady Putters President Kristen McLinden (612- 616-9106 or kristenmclinden@gmail.com).
