FEBRUARY 16 The Servants Knew "But the servants which drew the water knew " (John 2:9). When in old Cana water was made wine And tested by the governor of the feast, He did not know the mystery divine Of whence or how; and yet the very least Of those that did the kitchen drudgery knew. They filled the pots. They heard the high command, And at His word the wondrous nectar drew, And felt a sacred Presence close at hand. ’Tls ever so. Who do the work of life, In magic morning with the world asleep. Or bravely face some slow heart-shatter ing strife, Or with the stars their midnight watches keep, Learn many a secret, while their burdens grow, That only such as draw the water know. —J ohn W . D ouglas . "Bread corn is bruised” (Isa. 28:28). The farmer does not gather timothy and blue grass, and break it with a heavy ma chine. But he takes great pains with the wheat. So God takes great pains with those who are to be of much use to Him. There is a nature in them that needs this discipline. Don't wonder if the bread corn is treated with the wise, discriminating care that will fit it for food. He knows the way He is taking, and there is infinite tenderness in the oversight He gives.—A. B. S impson . FEBRUARY 18 God’s Tenderness "God shall wipe away all fears from their eyes” (Rev. 21:4). There are few friends who are intimate enough, if they should see you weeping, to approach, and with their own hand tenderly wipe away the falling tear. But that is what God does. Blessed intimacy! Holy familiarity! Precious nearness! It is worth while to shed tears from a broken heart to have God come near enough to wipe them away; and before we enter heaven this part of heaven may come to us. Jesus now with His pierced hand wipes away our tears. —A. C. D ixon . FEBRUARY 19 Blessings of Solitude "He departed again into a mountain him self alone” (John 6:15). One said, “As oft as I have been among men, I returned home less a man than I was before.” . . . He therefore that intends to attain to the more inward and spiritual things of religion, must with Jesus depart from the multitude and press of people! No man doth safely appear abroad, but he who can abide at home. No man doth safely speak but he that is glad to hold his peace. . . . No man doth safely rule, but he that hath learned gladly to obey. —T homas a K empis . Loneliness is always the price of leader ship.— S elected . FEBRUARY 17 Discipline
