Sunday School Workers need ARNOLD'S Practical Commentary D e v e l o p e d

From useless indolence, small or great, let us totally abstain through grace. —H andley C. G. M oule . FEBRUARY 24 Living in the Heavenlies “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above " (Col. 3:1). I think it was Spurgeon who used to say that this chapter begins in the heavenlies and ends in the kitchen. We never enter into robust spiritual life until we have some thing of this magnificent inclusiveness . . . We must regard the lowly concerns of our daily walk and conversation as being vital ly related to the heavenlies, and we must daringly believe that we can discharge the humblest duty while still breathing the air of the mountain-tops.— J. H. J owett . Here is an illustration of intention unful filled, of worthy purpose unaccomplished, of divine design frustrated. I doubt not Haran was a good place to live in. There would be plenty of room and food for man and beast. . . . But he made a goal of a stopping-place on the way; and being the head of the family and their lord, he im peded the progress of them all while he lived; and no Christian can stop like that on the journey without delaying others also, “for none of us liveth to himself.” —W . G raham S croggie . FEBRUARY 26 Repentance “For godly sorrow worketh repentance” (2 Cor. 7:10). Genuine, spiritual mourning for sin is the work of the Spirit of God. Repentance is too choice a flower to grow in nature’s garden. If thou hast one particle of real hatred for sin, God must have given it thee, for human nature’s thorns never produced a single fig . . . Sincere repentance is con tinual. Believers repent until their dying day. This dropping well is not intermit tent. Every other sorrow yields to time, but this dear sorrow grows with our growth. —C harles H addon S purgeon . FEBRUARY 27 Separation "Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Al mighty” (2 Cor. 6:17, 18). Forty hours took Israel out of Egypt, but forty years did not take Egypt out of Israel. This is an illustration of many who are in stantly saved from sin and out of the world, but in whom the world remains a long time. —Gospel Minister. Take my poor heart, and let it be Forever closed to all but Thee; Seal Thou my breast, and let me wear That pledge of love forever there. — S elected . FEBRUARY 25 Stopping Short “And they came unto Haran, and dwelt there . . . and Terah died in Haran " (Gen. 11:31,32).

FEBRUARY 20 Treasures of Darkness

“And I will give thee the; treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places " (Isa. 45:3). My soul, do not despise the shadows of life. . . Do not exclaim when they are passing over thee that thy way is hid from the Lord. These shadows are sent to thee, not as hidings, but as revelations of the face of God; they come to thee as messengers of light. They tell thee what thou couldst not know without them—that there is a life stronger than the natural life. How couldst thou learn that, if the natural life never failed thee?— G eorge M atheson . FEBRUARY 21 Power in Prayer “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication“ (Acts 1:14). Not many days after this, in answer to united and continued prayer, the Holy Spirit did come upon them, and they were all filled. . . . Since the days before Pente cost, has the whole church ever put aside every other work, and waited upon God for ten days, that that power might be mani fested? We have given too much attention to method, and to machinery, and to re sources, and too little to the source of power.—J. H udson T aylor . Lord, we ask it, hardly knowing What this wondrous gift may be; Yet fulfill to overflowing— Thy great meaning let us see: Take us, Lord, oh, take us truly, Mind and soul, and heart and will! Empty us and cleanse us throughly, Then with all Thy fullness fill. — S elected . "For to me to live is Christ“ (Phil. 1:21). I wonder how many of us have realized that there is only one Person in the wide universe who can live the Christian life, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. It is His life. You can no more live His life apart from the fact that He indwells you than you can live anybody else’s life. . . . The Christian life is essentially the outliv ing of the inliving Christ. “Christ liveth in me.” A little girl reading through a verse in the Word of God said this: “He that be- lieveth hath 'internal' life.” It was a mis quotation, but it was very true. The Lord Jesus Christ actually lives within. —C aptain R eginald W allis . FEBRUARY 22 The Indwelling Christ “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time” (Eph. 5:15, 16). Familiar inconsistency of our Christian life, I fear, is an unthrifty use of time, that mysterious talent which, unlike other tal ents, does not grow, but is spent in the using. Let us not use it with a weary anx iety, but let there be a grave habitual re membrance that it and we are in His hands for whom we exist, to whom we equally belong, whether we toil or whether we rest.
