pel minister, the following testimony of his is significant: "I have always found that my own comfort and efficiency in preaching have been in direct proportion to the fre quency and depth of daily communion with God. I know of no way in which we can do our work but (1) by quiet fellowship with Him; (2) by resolute keeping up of a student’s habits, which need some power of saying ‘no’; (3) by conscientious pulpit preparation. The secret of success in every thing is trust in God and hard work.” Throughout a long life (more than eighty years), Dr. Maclaren availed himself of that "secret of success," and his clear and scholarly writings are one fruit of this prac tice. His work, Expositions of Holy Scrip ture —a complete exposition of the Bible— is vigorous and rich, a ready aid to any Christian worker or preacher. This library of extraordinary expository wealth cannot fail to enrich any one who uses it; into it is built the life of this truly great man; great in his personal piety and great in his rare insight into Scripture. Strongly bound in maroon buckram cloth—17 volumes, 15,000 pages, nearly 2,000 expositions—the set is available at surprisingly low cost. These books should be in every preacher’s library. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Com plete set, $15.00 postpaid. H. V. Morton is one of the most widely read of’ living writers of travel books. "Landscape, history, archeology, people of the past and people of the present, animals, flowers, business—Mr. Morton misses none of these elements and they are all fused by his artistry into something that be comes his own.” In his book, Through Bible Lands, the author takes the reader with him on a memorable journey through the lands of the Bible, and enables him to relive the unforgettable events that have taken place there. The "journey" begins at Alexandretta, in Syria, and continues by way of Aleppo to Bagdad, Babylon, and Ur of the Chaldees. Following glimpses of many of the strongholds of primitive Christianity, the book closes with a description of events in Rome during Easter week. The work is exceptionally well written and beau tifully illustrated with twenty-five sepia half tones and two maps. As a travelogue, it will be accepted as a choice book. But, as one reader has pointed out, "here and there are bits that savor of the liberal school of theologians.” To the author, the Old Testament prophecies are merely the ex pression in literature of the emotion of "home sickness.”# Discerning readers will find unending pleasure in these pages, but many will wish that the fact had been presented that, throughout the Word of God, "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Pet. 1:21). 452 pages. Dodd, Mead & Co. Cloth. Price $3.00. Who Is the Holy Spirit? By HENRY W. FROST Even among devout believers, there is much ignorance concerning the Person, office, and work of the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Because of this ignorance, there is lack of assurance, absence of spiritual power, and a with holding of love and obedience which are due this heaven-sent Comforter. Dr. Frost is exceptionally thorough in his treatment of this important sub ject. He gives chapter and verse for his assertions relating to Scripture. Sections of the book concern the Spirit’s personality, offices, sovereignty, limit ing, baptism, filling, sanctifying, empowering, and objectives. 124 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.25. Sequel to The Three Baers, this charmingly written report of the experiences of the Christmas time adventures of the triplets, Iona, Iva, and Teddy, will please Junior readers. There is a wholesome atmosphere of Christian home life. 86 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Cloth. Price 50 cents. [Continued on page 47] Through Bible Lands By H. V. for his deeply spiritual, searching, and ra diantly expository sermons. He became at once widely and favorably received in America. Writing of him recently in The Sunday School Times, the editor of that journal stated: “Maclaren had been only twenty years old when, in 1846, he began his first pastorate at Southampton. After twelve fruitful years there he was called to Manchester, at thirty-two years of age, and he speedily took rank as one of the foremost preachers of his time. For forty- five years in the Manchester pulpit he found himself confronted by immense congrega tions, and God made him ‘the wellspring of a far-flowing stream of spiritual life.’ “Theologically, Dr. Maclaren belonged to the evangelical school, magnifying the glorious gospel of the ever blessed God. Upon the doctrine of atonement for sin through Christ he never faltered in his ministry—great, prolonged, inspiring, and in many of its features incomparable in modern times.” As being indicative of Dr. Maclaren’s ap proach to the study of the work of the gos
Expositions of H oly Scripture By ALEXANDER MACLAREN
With the prevalent tendency toward sketchy reading, textual discourse (often without regard for context), and sensational topics, not many truly expository preach ers of the Word of God are being devel oped today. Yet there is no greater need in America or in the world than for min isters and laymen who will set themselves to that profitable task of knowing what the Bible actually says, and unfolding its teach ings to others. Alexander Maclaren was, in the truest sense, a Bible preacher. He continued in this capacity for fifty years, and came to be known—and properly—as “the prince of expositors.” Like Spurgeon and Moody, he was able to couch truth in such simple language that his written messages were sought by thousands of readers, while, dur ing his lifetime, other thousands waited eagerly upon his spoken word. In 1886, when Dr. Maclaren became a regular writer for The Sunday School Times, he was well known in Great Britain
