2024 SAFETY AND QUALITY ACCOUNT

The 2024 NSLHD Safety and Quality Account has been released, showcasing a range of district achievements over the 2023-2024 financial year that have led to significant improvements in patient outcomes, staff well- being, and community health. As a testament to NSLHD’s ongoing commitment to safety and quality, this annual publication allows the district to reflect on accomplishments and assess performance against safety and quality targets. It reports that NSLHD met the vast majority of safety and quality indicators over the last financial year. The Account highlights how patient experiences and feedback are gathered and addressed, showing examples of partnerships with consumers and initiatives that enhance shared decision-making, such as including patients and consumers in bedside handovers. A dedicated chapter on NSLHD’s "workplace culture that drives safe, high-quality care" outlines the programs and initiatives that create an engaged, supportive work environment. These efforts empower staff to raise safety issues and deliver reliable, person-centered healthcare.

What did you think of this issue? Please give us your feedback.

The Future Priorities chapter outlines several key safety and quality goals underway across NSLHD.

Seeing kindness in action across NSW Health Kindness and compassion are key to elevating the human experience for everyone. The Gathering of Kindness is a key initiative of Elevating the Human Experience: Guide to Action, which uses World Kindness Day to continue conversations about a culture of kindness in healthcare delivery. Staff across our facilities and services are invited to get involved. During Gathering of Kindness week, there are several ways for you to take part both virtually and in person. Take a picture with the ‘Kindness is my Superpower’ selfie frames to promote the importance that small acts of kindness play in making a difference in the experiences of our staff, patients, families, and carers in healthcare. Share a picture with us by emailing it to NSLHD-ThePatientExperience@health.nsw.gov.au

Can’t make it to the live sessions? Catch up on panel discussions, keynote sessions and conversations on demand on the Elevating the Human Experience Gathering of Kindness intranet site at a time convenient for you. NSLHD 160 Tales of Kindness NSLHD is again setting a challenge to capture 160 Tales of Kindness from across the district to celebrate the impact kindness can have on people and places. In 2023, 167 tales were captured through the NSLHD compliment portal. Kindness cards will be available for staff to send via the compliments portal* between 11 and 17 November 2024. Staff are invited to send a message of thanks to a colleague for their act of kindness through the portal and reflect on how it can potentially make someone’s day brighter. ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE AWARENESS WEEK 2024

NSLHD will celebrate World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week during 18 - 24 November 2024.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines.

As a result, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective, making infections harder or impossible to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death.

Up to a third of NSLHD inpatients are on an antimicrobial at any one time. The antimicrobials prescribed, dispensed and administered must be evidence-based and aligned with local or national guidelines. Prescriptions should have a documented indication, duration or review date, and our patients must be informed of the antimicrobial plan and potential side effects.

Visit the AMR Awareness stalls during AMR awareness week at RNSH (19 Nov), HKH and Ryde Hospital, participate in an online quiz for your chance to win a prize.

More information will be shared via the all-staff email weekly bulletin in the coming weeks.

We all have a part to play to help reduce antibiotic resistance.
