A Historic Badge

An iconic piece of jewelry — worn throughout time and across generations — our badge symbolizes the sisterhood, leadership and lifelong commitment that define our beloved Alpha Phi. While its meaning has remained steadfast, its appearance has evolved. In 1906, the standard gold badge we know today was approved at the 18th Convention in Syracuse, New York. Before that, badges came in a variety of designs, often adorned with gemstones and intricate detailing. One stunning example belonged to Ida Sawyer Stewart (Eta-Boston), who joined Alpha Phi in 1895. Her gold badge features delicate engravings, with emeralds and diamonds set in the Alpha. A true showpiece, it carries the same deep significance our badge holds today and will for decades to come. 
