L’entreprise, Plastiq.com, fondée en 2012 aux États-Unis, permet d’acquitter des créances par carte de crédit, là où ce n’est habituellement pas possible. Cela inclut notamment les taxes dans diverses municipalités ou autres formes de gouvernements, les taxes scolaires, etc. En 2013, l’Agence du revenu du Canada (ARC) a autorisé l’utilisation de Plastiq pour payer certains soldes dus à l’ARC. Toutefois, l’agence souligne que cette autorisation ne constitue pas pour autant un endossement de l’entreprise. Selon Yvan Ruel, la Ville prend cette affaire très au sérieux, et a remis l’affaire
La Ville de Hawkesbury a récemment été alertée des activités d’une entre- prise offrant aux contribuables de payer leurs taxes foncières à l’aide d’une carte de crédit. «Nous avons été avisés par le canton de Champlain de ce fait », a rapporté Yvan Ruel, coordonnateur des communications à la Ville de Hawkesbury. Après avoir vérifié et constaté sur le site de Plastiq.com qu’ils se présentaient comme des partenaires de confiance de la Ville, « nous avons averti la PPO et publié un communiqué ».
