Falcons slam Ravens into ground
liaths stomped all over their archrivals, the Ravens, from Russell’s Saint Thomas Aqui- nas Catholic High School in a home season opener. The Falcons grounded the Ravens 16-0 during the Sept. 26 game, never let- ting the visiting team get close to scoring even a field goal. “That was the first time our defence
scored a shutout,” said Falcons Head Coach Scott Stoqua. “That was a big win for us.” Fullback Damien Coh “pushed through the line” to score a two-yard touchdown for the Falcons. The team’s placekicker, Darren Anderson booted the ball over the uprights for an extra point. He also added three field goals to the Falcons’ side of the scoreboard. On the defensive play, Anderson, filling the halfback spot on the line accounted for three interceptions against the Ravens while safety man Cody Meness also nailed an interception against Saint Thomas Aqui- nas. On the road during the first half of Octo- ber, SFX lost 30-7 to North Grenville Oct. 2 and then 35-10 to St. Lawrence High in Cor- nwall on Oct. 9. Meness pulled off an inter- cept and ran the ball back for a touchdown against North Grenville with Anderson kicking the extra point. Against Cornwall
Falcons quarterback Zach Barber drove in for a touchdown with Anderson again kic- king the extra point then later adding a field goal to the SFX score. Stoqua noted that the Falcons showed real improvement in both their scoring and their on-field play against both North Gren- ville and St. Lawrence compared to the past season’s results. “Our defence is much improved,” he said, “and our offence is gettingmore consistent.” Hometown fans are advised to keep a watch on Barber and Anderson on the Falcons offence and Meness and Gordon Shepherd on the D-line. The Falcons are in Cornwall Oct. 9 for a game against Cornwall Collegiate, then it’s over to Kemptville against St. Michael’s on Oct. 16 before the next home games Oct. 23 against South Grenville and Oct. 30 versus Tagwi.

HAMMOND | For the Falcons at Saint Fran- cis Xavier it could not be a sweeter start to the high school football season. The SFX Catholic High School gridiron go-
Ladycats have eyes on Vegas during their short autumn season. RDHS was at the National Capital Sevens Tourna- ment Sept. 25 at Hillcrest High in Ottawa. RDHS won enough games and points to earn a spot in the championship round la- ter this month at the Twin Elm Rugby Park in Nepean.
ROCKLAND | The Rockland Wildcats varsi- ty girls have their sights set on the bright lights of Las Vegas for an international rugby adventure trip. The International Rugby Sevens invita- tional tournament is in the City That Never Sleeps in Nevada state next February. Men’s and women’s teams from around the world hammer away at each other over the Feb. 14 weekend at the University of Las Vegas. But a week before that international clash of titans hits the turf, the International High School Sevens tournament takes place and the Rockland District High School Wildcats varsity girls want to make sure there is at least one Eastern Ontario team listed in the game schedule. “So we’ll be doing some fundraising,” said Coach Bill Foster, with a smile. Meanwhile the varsity girls have at least one sevens rugby tournament to play be- fore the fall season is over. Their own invi- tational event is set for Oct. 16 with eight teams confirmed, including themselves. Coach Foster is trying to determine if there might also be one more tournament in North Dundas Township later in the month that the junior members of the varsity girls squad can enter.
