Muhammad Ali Don’t miss this new eight-hour, four-part documentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns. The new series, which was in development for six years, was also written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon, whose previous collaborations with Burns include The Central Park Five (2012), Jackie Robinson (2016) and East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story (2020). Muhammad Ali brings to life one of the best-known and most indelible figures of the 20th-century, a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated millions of fans throughout the world with his mesmerizing combination of speed, grace, and power in the ring, and charm and playful boasting outside of it. Ali insisted on being himself unconditionally and became a global icon and inspiration to people everywhere.

In partnership with Minnesota’s diverse communities, we are striving to become the premiere media resource for educators and parents statewide. You might wonder: why TPT? Can a television station provide educational content? In a word, yes! But only by partnering with local and national teachers, afterschool program leaders, researchers, parents and other caring adults who are committed to K-12 education. In fact, TPT has relied upon this collaborative approach for over 35 years, employing it to produce long-running PBS favorites like Newton’s Apple , Dragonfly TV , SciGirls and Hero Elementary . Hummingbirds: More Than Little Blurs at Your Birdfeeder By Craig Miller
Jon Dunn summed up his passion for hummingbirds succinctly. "You're dead inside if you don't like hummingbirds," he says. The 48-year-old naturalist and photographer’s paean to the tiny flying gems, "The Glitter in the Green," chronicles Dunn's far-flung travels to find and photograph the birds he describes as being "dipped in rainbows."
the natural world as a resource to be used by us. Generally, in the wild we can't get that close to things, but hummingbirds are different. Even in the wild they'll feed, relatively unconcerned by our approach. They just do not perceive us as a threat. And I think that deep down that's really reassuring for us. Next Avenue: They're also some of the most remarkable little machines in the animal kingdom. They really are. Their hearts can beat a thousand to one thousand and two hundred times a minute, which, when you think that our average heartbeat is about eighty beats per minute, that's amazing in itself. And at night, of course, they've got to sleep and they can't feed. And so, the whole hummingbird kind of shuts down and they enter a state of torpor and they slow their heartbeats right down to under a hundred beats per minute, so its energy requirements are just pulled right back. And then when day breaks and the hummingbirds awaken, they effectively reanimate and come back to life. Next Avenue: And somehow, they have the energy to migrate thousands of miles every year.
Next Avenue tracked down Dunn at his lair in the Shetland Islands (just north of Scotland) and asked him to share some insights from his book. Next Avenue: You've photographed and written about all manner of wildlife, but hummingbirds are the only species to which you've devoted an entire book. It seems from your writing that it's their tenacious personality as much as their color that attracts you. Jon Dunn: Yeah, my theory is that we're used to a lot of wildlife treating us with caution and we've given them ample cause to do so. You know, we've had millennia now of treating

hummingbirds -- a female was ringed (banded) in Tallahassee, Florida and recovered up in Alaska. She'd covered almost three and a half thousand miles. That's a huge migration by any standards, but for a bird which weighs effectively the same as a penny, that's just mind-boggling to me. And also, you know, for a bird which is largely fueled on sugar. That's amazing, too. What these birds are doing is kind of surfing the advent of spring, where they're trying to move north just as stuff is starting to come into bloom, which they can feed on because they don't really have fat reserves to speak of. They're not like some birds, which plump up massively, and then just go for it with a really long migration and just burn that body mass. Next Avenue: Speaking of eating, there's a fascinating account in the book of how they eat — and it's probably not how many of us imagined. They're not using their bills as straws?
Hummingbirds feed at flowers, and what the hummingbird's tongue actually does when it's immersed in nectar, it blooms, it flowers for itself.
So, lots of tiny little flaps along the length of the tongue open up as it's immersed in liquid. And then when the tongue is retracted out of the liquid, the flaps close and they trap the nectar within. The entire feeding process — the dipping in and out of the tongue — is feeding passively on the nectar, is not having to lap it like a cat.
It's an incredibly efficient way of feeding, because the hummingbird isn't expending any particular energy in doing this.
Next Avenue: Do you have any parting tips for backyard birders who want to attract more hummers?
Obviously if you're going to put a hummingbird feeder up, make sure you clean it regularly. Don't let that thing get stale and stinky, because hummingbirds need clean, fresh, sugar water. Use refined sugar rather than unrefined sugar. It needs to be the stuff which isn't good for us — the pure white stuff. It's great for hummingbird feeders. But most important, if you've got a backyard, plant some native wildflowers, and nectar-bearing plants. Audubon has a native plants database on their website and that is a brilliant resource to have a look at and try and pick some things which will give you some colors throughout the summer.
So, you know, you've still got a pretty yard, but at the same time something which provides successional nectar sources for the hummingbirds. All photos by Jon Dunn

CROWN THE WRITER SPREADS JOY BY GIVING HER BOOKS AWAY By T. Aaron Cisco
In the hands of a writer, art and activism blend in powerful ways, impacting the hearts and minds of millions of readers. Authors are more than just catalysts for change. The extent and intent of their efforts don’t end with the release of their work. They speak out and build up. They debate and demonstrate. They lobby and petition for their cause, as much and more so than anyone else with a passion for equity, equality and justice for all.
Continuing in the tradition of authors taking action is local author, Crown Shepherd, who has passed out free copies of her first book, Black Boy, Black Boy , at demonstrations, protests, festivals and community gatherings in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Written under the pen name Crown the Writer, Shepherd’s mission is clear: She aims to uplift Minnesota’s Black community amid the turmoil of the last year-and-a-half.
An illustrated children’s book, Black Boy, Black Boy , inspires Black young ones to see a bright future in front of them – one in which they can be anything they want, whether a doctor, an astronaut or the President of the United States.
The following sections are excerpted from a conversation Shepherd had with us about her work, her campaign to teach kids to see a path without barriers and how other independent authors can seek a publishing path that works for them. Visit RacismUnveiled.org to read the complete text. With a title like Black Boy, Black Boy , clearly this is a book that’s intended for a specific audience underrepresented in the marketplace. However, the message of the book is universal. At the protests and demonstrations, have you seen the attention for the book kind of going beyond little Black boys?
Crown Shepherd (a.k.a. Crown the Writer): Yeah, I definitely have. The families that intentionally buy the book from me [are] a blessing, and I’ve met a lot of little white boys who have come back to talk to me about the book, saying it’s their favorite book. And I think it’s beautiful, because like you said, it’s geared towards Black boys, but it is a universal message that everybody, especially white children need to hear, because they need to also know that Black people can be in these roles, but you will potentially see a Black doctor, or an astronaut, and we need to normalize these things. So yeah, it has moved over universally to non-Black children also loving the book.

What’s next for Crown the Writer? How are you looking to expand and move forward? Black Girl, Black Girl . I’m hoping to have it out in November, but it’s still being illustrated. We’re at the final phases of illustration. And before that can be published, Crown has to be published [Crown refers to the superhero character in the comic Crown Universe ]. Black Girl, Black Girl is going to be just as amazing as Black Boy, Black Boy , no doubt. But tell me about Crown.
It’s your typical superhero story. Right now, the first issue is being illustrated and it’s her origin story. I wrote Crown because I wanted a Black, female superhero. We don’t have that, where from the get-go, that’s who she is. She didn’t take over like Ironheart or anything like that. This is her story, her power, and it is about a Black girl whose superpower is her hair. For centuries, Black hair has been under attack – and it still is to this day. That’s where the relaxer came from. That’s where the straightening flat irons came from, and the hot combs. Black people put their hair through so much damage to fit into white standards. I have dreads, and some places consider that unprofessional, for me to have dreads and just Black hair in general, you know. My mom was a beautician, so my hair was always natural. I did go through that relaxer stage of life that all Black girls go through.
And that’s what Crown is about. Her origin story is about that crucial life experience every Black girl, for the most part, goes through. If you were raised in a Black home, you had a relaxer at some point. You burned your hair off at some point or went bald at some point. I wanted to change that game, especially for my nieces. I want them to love their natural hair. I want to remind women and show little girls how powerful Black hair can be. So it’s a story about a Black girl whose superpower is her hair. And when I say her hair, I mean every hairstyle you can think of that Black hair can hold – which is a lot, so she’s pretty invincible. She has a limitless arsenal at her disposal, with Black characters rooted in a very Black-centric storyline, and they fight white supremacy. So, I mean, there’s nothing better than that.
