BUSTING THE TOP 5 MYTHS ABOUT FLUORIDE Fluoride Facts vs. Fiction
At Hagerstown Smiles Dental Care, we hear lots of questions about fluoride. It’s been a hot topic lately in the news, on social media, and even around the dinner table. With so much information (and misinformation) floating around, it can feel overwhelming to know what’s true. We always want the best for our patients, and this usually involves following the latest research-backed recommendations from the American Dental Association. ada.org has a wealth of information about it, but here’s a quick run-down of some of the highlights. To summarize it all in one sentence, as with most things in life, too much of something is usually bad for you (excluding the topics in the country music song “Too Much Fun”). A little bit all in the right balance makes for a healthy life!
developing teeth grow stronger from the inside out. Most public water systems still safely add fluoride, as this has been heralded as one of the top public
health breakthroughs in the last century, especially helping at-risk communities and individuals who may
not be regular at brushing their teeth twice a day. The studies posting harmful effects of fluoridated water are usually measuring a very high concentration. So again, the right amount is the key! Topical fluoride is what we apply directly to your teeth at the dental office. It sticks right to the enamel where it’s needed most. At Hagerstown Smiles, our fluoride varnish is dye-free, hypoallergenic, naturally sweetened with xylitol, and safe for patients of all ages. MYTH #4: NATURAL OR ‘FLUORIDE-FREE’ TOOTHPASTE IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE. Not True! Here’s a little-known fact: In order for toothpaste to earn the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance, it must contain fluoride. That means every whitening, sensitivity, or tartar-control toothpaste you buy with the ADA seal has fluoride in it! MYTH #5: ADULTS DON’T REALLY NEED FLUORIDE AT THEIR DENTAL VISITS. It’s Actually the Opposite! Topical fluoride at the dental office isn’t just for kids. It benefits smiles at every age. Adults who have had fillings, crowns, or other dental work have already invested in their oral health, and fluoride helps protect that investment by keeping the teeth stronger and more resistant to cavities. Bacteria love to target areas around crowns and fillings, so using fluoride is like giving your dental work an extra layer of insurance. Fluoride isn’t a mystery, and it isn’t something to fear. It’s a safe, natural, and effective tool for keeping your teeth strong, healthy, and cavity-free. Whether it’s in your toothpaste, drinking water, or an in-office treatment, fluoride is an important part of your dental care routine. If you have any questions, our team at Hagerstown Smiles Dental Care is always here to help. Ask at your next visit. We love talking teeth!
MYTH #1: FLUORIDE IS A HARMFUL CHEMICAL. Not so!
Fluoride isn’t an intimidating lab-made chemical. It’s a naturally occurring mineral. You can find it in water, soil, and even fresh fruits and vegetables. But here’s a catch: Bottled water and filtration systems may have removed the fluoride. So we can’t always assume we’re receiving fluoride from these sources. Similarly, if your home uses well water, you may be missing out on fluoride in the water. For children in particular, fluoride supplements may be recommended to help protect against cavities. For the most part, you can assume that well water does not have fluoride in it, but you can test it (and your filtered water at your house) to be sure! Fredericktowne Labs in Myersville does a great job with this water testing service. If the water your family regularly drinks does not contain fluoride, prescription supplements are recommended for kids. Ask us or your pediatrician!
MYTH #2: FLUORIDE ONLY PREVENTS CAVITIES. It Does so Much More!
Yes, fluoride is famous for fighting cavities, but that’s just part of it. Fluoride bonds with calcium in your teeth, making them stronger and more resistant to daily acid attacks from food and drinks. And it also helps with sensitivity (that zing you feel when sipping something cold or sweet). Popular sensitivity toothpastes, like Sensodyne, work in part because of the fluoride they contain. MYTH #3: ALL FLUORIDE IS THE SAME. Busted! There are actually two main types of fluoride: systemic and topical. Systemic fluoride is when you swallow something containing fluoride, usually either fluoridated water or fluoride tablets for kids. This helps

LOVE COFFEE?
There’s a quiet magic in the early morning. It’s a time made for gentleness, nourishing both body and spirit. That’s the beauty of hygge , a Danish philosophy rooted in comfort, mindfulness, and savoring life’s small pleasures. Pronounced “ hoo-gah, ” this gentle lifestyle encourages you to slow down and enjoy the present moment. And what better time to begin than first thing in the morning? Begin right where you wake, still nestled beneath the covers. Before your feet ever touch the floor, take a moment to stretch — not the kind that feels like a chore but one that softly awakens your muscles and soothes your joints. This small act stirs your blood and eases your body into the day with kindness. Let your shower become a sanctuary. Choose a soap that smells like the season — apple, cinnamon, or something crisp and woodsy. Let the warm water remind you that you’re not in a rush, that this moment is yours. As the coffee brews or tea steeps, light a candle. Watch it flicker and think of someone who has touched your life. Offer a quiet thank-you and wish them well. This small blessing is a gift to them and you. Start Your Day the Danish Way Create Hygge in Every Comforting Morning Step
For many of us, the day doesn’t officially start until we’ve had that first glorious
sip of coffee. With its rich aroma, the warmth (or cooling) of the cup, and the little burst of energy, coffee has earned its rightful place in our daily routines. But if you’re a coffee lover, you’ve probably noticed that your favorite drink has a not-so-sweet side effect: stains on your teeth. Coffee contains tannins, which are natural compounds that stick to the enamel of your teeth. Over time, these tannins can cause your smile to look yellow or dull. While this might feel like a cruel trade- off, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your morning brew without sacrificing your bright smile. Rinse and Refresh One of the easiest tricks is simply rinsing your mouth with water after finishing your coffee. This quick step helps wash away tannins before they can settle in. Even better, brush your teeth about 30 minutes later (brushing too soon can wear down enamel softened by acidity). Use a Straw If iced coffee is your go-to, sip it through a straw. This reduces direct contact between the coffee and your teeth, lowering the chance of staining. Bonus: Straws also help keep your lipstick in place. It’s a double win. Pair Coffee With Healthy Habits Eating crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples or carrots, acts as a natural toothbrush, scrubbing away some of the buildup on your teeth. Plus, staying hydrated throughout the day helps keep your mouth clean and your enamel strong. Choose Whitening Boosts At-home whitening toothpaste can help reduce surface stains, while professional whitening treatments offer a deeper refresh. If you’re concerned about discoloration, your dentist can recommend the safest, most effective option for your smile. Keep Up With Dental Visits Regular cleanings are your best defense against stubborn stains. Your dental team can polish away buildup and keep your smile looking as fresh as that first cup of coffee in the morning. At the end of the day, life’s too short to give up something you love, especially coffee. With a few mindful habits, you can savor every sip and still show off a bright, confident smile. Cheers to happy mornings and healthy teeth!
Slip on your walking shoes and greet the world outside. Even a short stroll can awaken a sense of calm. Listen to the autumn leaves rustle, feel the sun on your cheeks. Let nature’s rhythm soften your own.
These hygge-inspired rituals help you reclaim mornings with grace, presence, and joy. You’ve earned mornings
like these. Let them carry you forward.

As cooler temperatures, golden leaves, and holidays roll in, fall is one of the best-kept secrets in fishing. While many pack up their rods after summer, savvy anglers know autumn is when the real magic happens. Fish feed aggressively as they prepare for winter, and the crowds of people enjoying the water have thinned out. A few tweaks can level up your fishing game this season, whether you’re chasing bass, crappie, or trout. Target Shallow Waters As temperatures drop, baitfish like shad move into the backs of creeks and embayments. Predatory fish such as bass and crappie follow, making these areas hotspots. Focus your efforts on these shallow zones to increase your catch rate. Experiment With Depths Fall turnover can scatter fish throughout various depths. Don’t hesitate to try different depths until you locate active fish. Using a fish finder can help you identify these productive zones. Fish Throughout the Day Unlike summer, when fish are most active during dawn and dusk, fall fish feed more consistently throughout the day. This allows for flexible fishing schedules without the need for early starts.
submerged wood and rocky banks during fall. These areas provide shelter and warmth, and targeting them can lead to successful catches.
Match the Catch In fall, baitfish grow larger. Adjust your lure size and color to mimic the prevalent forage in your fishing area. This increases the likelihood of enticing bites. Explore Stocked Waters Many lakes and streams are stocked with trout and catfish in the fall. These fish are often eager to bite, providing excellent opportunities for anglers. Utilize Live Bait Live bait can be particularly effective in cooler temperatures. Minnows, nightcrawlers, and shad can more effectively entice sluggish fish than artificial lures. Monitor Water Conditions Fall often brings changes in water levels due to drawdowns. Stay informed about these conditions, as they influence fish locations and behavior.
