IF IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ASTRONAUTS, IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR US HOW NASA’S SECRET FITNESS FORMULA INSPIRED OH!MINO
Hey there, readers! My name is Michael, and I’m a fitness enthusiast, science geek, and the founder of the supplement brand Oh!mino. I’m writing to you today because you’re a lot like me — fully immersed in fitness culture, and dedicated to helping others become the best and healthiest versions of themselves. I think that Oh!mino could help you with that mission, and I hope you’ll consider giving it a try. Today, I want to tell you the story of how I developed Oh!mino back in 2018 after I came across a study sponsored by NASA that absolutely blew my mind. But too understand how that happened and how Oh!mino can help your clients, we need to rewind — all the way back to high school. As a teenager, astronauts couldn’t have been further from my thoughts. I was your typical high school athlete and discovered my passion for the fitness culture through participating in football, tennis, and track. My competitive nature and fitness obsession laid the foundation for a career in supplements … I just didn’t know it at the time!
plenty of research to do. It was fun, but when I had the opportunity to join one of my customers in the health food field instead, I went for it. That experience propelled me into the exciting supplement industry (vitamins, minerals, supplements, herbs, etc.). In 1973, I was working for Leiner Health Products, the largest vitamin and supplement manufacturer in the world. I headed up new products and pioneered many items still on the market today. In 2008, I took a big step and started my own company, Oh!Nutrition. We helped numerous brands launch innovative new supplements in the market. By focusing on innovation, we had a preview of hundreds of great ideas and interesting clinical trials came across my desk. But nothing stopped me in my tracks until 2018, when I first read that NASA- sponsored study. The gist was this: NASA had a problem. Astronauts were losing muscle mass while they were in space. They’d get back from trips and have to go straight into rehab to fight the atrophy. Obviously this wasn’t ideal, so NASA gathered the world’s leading authorities on amino acids (the building blocks that make up proteins), and they came up with this study protocol to find a solution. They gathered a group of people matching the demographics of their astronauts and put them on bed rest to simulate the effects of zero gravity. All participants were taken off their medications and caffeine, and they ate the same diet. Then the clinicians split
them into two groups: one ingested a specific ratio of essential amino acids, and the other took a food starch placebo. Throughout the study, these people stayed almost completely immobile — they were hooked up to catheters and used bed pans. The only time they could move was to lift a TV remote and scroll through the internet. Sounds awful, right? By the end, the placebo group all had muscle atrophy. Incredibly, the group taking the amino acids didn’t! Some of them actually gained muscle while doing nothing. When NASA did a second study, they found those results were even more pronounced for people over 35. This absolutely blew me away. Back then, the conversation around fitness supplements was all about BCAAs and whey protein. But here was a study showing that this specific formulation of essential amino acids — all nine of them, not just the three in BCAAs — stimulated 11 times more muscle protein synthesis than whey and 20 times more than BCAAs! And all without sugar or calories, for people who weren’t even exercising! I started Oh!Nutrition because I knew I’d regret it if I never took a shot at building my own company. Holding that study, I got the same feeling — I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t jump on the opportunity to Continued on Page 3 ...
After high school, I did the usual college thing followed by grad school and then started the all-too-familiar climb of the corporate ladder at several different ad agencies. That’s where I got into scientific studies and data. My job focused on launching new products, so there was

ACROSS ALL FITNESS LEVELS, AMY WHITE’S CLIENTS SEE POSITIVE RESULTS A NUTRITIONIST’S PERSPECTIVE ON OH!MINO
Amy White is a nutritionist, health coach, and weight loss expert, but a decade ago, she was simply a concerned wife and mother. Her daughter and husband both struggled with gut issues no expert could solve, so Amy decided to become the expert. She earned a master's degree in holistic nutrition and racked up certifications. Through her company, The Simplicity of Wellness, Amy helps hundreds of people change their lives. The majority of her client base is over 40 and struggling with extra weight and lifestyle diseases like Type 2 diabetes. When she first heard about Oh!mino, Amy was impressed by its electrolyte profile. Then she discovered the power of our amino acid formula. Over a year ago, she started using it to supplement her workouts and began recommending it to clients. “It just really fit into my life, and as I did more research, it became clear to me that it was an excellent supplement for my client base because they’re older people and they’re not eating
the amount of protein they should be eating,” Amy explains. “Offering Oh!mino is a way for me to go, ‘Here, enjoy this drink. It will help with your electrolyte balance, you'll feel better, and it will help with your muscle maintenance, too.’” Amy’s 80-year-old clients use Oh!mino to increase their muscle longevity and maintain lean muscle mass as they age. Her younger demographic uses it as an exercise supplement. “One of my clients is really using it as part of her exercise program, and she’s just in love with it,” Amy says. “She does the preworkout with the caffeine, then the post-workout stimulant-free, and she takes the capsules before she goes to bed. She was on a huge weight loss journey, so she has lost over 50 pounds and really increased her strength.” Thanks to her methods and Oh!mino, Amy says she’s healthier and fitter at 53 than she was a decade ago. Her husband, an endurance cyclist, also loves the supplement.

DEPRESSED, ANXIOUS, OR ANGRY? TRY LISTENING TO ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!
THE POWER OF MUSIC TO SHIFT YOUR MOOD
2020 has been a difficult year. If you’re feeling frustrated, angry, or depressed right now, you’re not alone! All over the world, people have been trying different strategies to cope with their feelings, including yoga, meditation, exercise, binge-watching their favorite TV shows, and even baking banana bread. But perhaps the most universal outlet and cure for pent-up emotions is music. Do you remember the clip that went viral in March of Italians in quarantine, singing together from their balconies? If you do, that’s probably because it made you smile. TIME heralded it as proof that “the country’s spirits are still strong,”
and it’s just one small example of how music uplifts people. This isn’t just an anecdotal effect, either. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, music can help us process emotions and fight mental health conditions like anxiety, dysregulation, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, schizophrenia, and more. So, how can you take advantage of music’s power to turn your mood around? One option is to create music of your own, but another is simply to listen. When it comes to flipping a bad mood on its head, a survey conducted by the Family Center for Recovery (FCR) suggests that rock is the genre of choice. “During any given year, depression affects approximately 5%–8% of Americans,” FCR reports. “According to our survey participants, the vast majority — around 89% — turn
to music in order to feel better. The top genre for depressed listeners is rock, followed closely by alternative, pop, and hip-hop/rap.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the blues came in last on the list.
To put the power of music to work, create playlists for each mood that you want to turn around, like “Anger,” “Frustration,” “Sadness,” “Anxiety,” or “Grief,” and fill them with songs from genres associated with fighting that feeling. According to FCR, rock is the most popular antidote to sadness and anxiety, and it’s also high on the list for anger, along with pop and country. Frustrated people opt for variations of rock, pop, punk, and heavy metal, and those stricken by grief turn to soft rock or soul. The artists are up to you, so fill up your lists, press play, and let the music do its work.

YOUR ‘CLEAN’ WORKOUT ROUTINE TURN HOUSEHOLD CHORES INTO EFFECTIVE EXERCISE
Everyone knows how labor-intensive cleaning can be. A long day of scrubbing down your house is a great way to work your muscles and get your blood pumping, so crank up some tunes, grab a mop, and get ready to transform your cleaning routine into a great workout. To get physical benefits from cleaning, you need to turn up the intensity of your methods. Exaggerate your motions, pick up your pace, and keep your abs tight and knees flexed. Nearly any chore can be turned into an exercise, but here are some ideas to get you started. • Vacuum: Vacuum briskly nonstop for at least 20 minutes, switching arms as you go. For an added challenge, do lunges as you vacuum and remember to keep your toes pointed straight ahead and your knees bent at 90-degree angles. • Pick Up: Instead of simply bending over to pick up toys or clothes, do a squat with every item you grab. Remember to use your legs, not your back. You can also do squats while unloading the dishwasher or with any other chore that involves repeated bending.
until your muscles start to burn and make sure you’re switching arms as you go.
• Cook: It’s not cleaning, but it’s still a chore with useful downtime. While food is simmering or thawing in the microwave, do some pushups, situps, or planks to get your muscles moving. You can implement dozens of exercises to turn mundane activities into beneficial workouts. Some chores will burn more calories than others, but every bit of activity helps. Now’s the time to work your way to a cleaner house and a healthier you.
• Wipe Down: Whether you’re wiping windows or scrubbing appliances, do big, exaggerated arm circles
