Health insurance premium deductions can make up a significant percentage of employee salaries. When health insurance premium costs are calculated as a percentage of base salary, it is found that the cost of Family coverage is an especially significant expense for lower-wage earners. Considering the financial impact of Family coverage, the reality may be that employees needing Family coverage may not be able to afford it. As a result, lower-wage earners may seek Medicaid coverage as an alternative or employment with a competing employer.
