Here at TZ Medical, we consider ourselves lucky to work in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by all of the natural beauty Oregon has to offer. In the winter, we’re just a short drive from skiing and snowboarding on Mt. Hood, and in warmer weather, opportunities to go hiking, biking, fishing, and kayaking are just beyond our doors. With all of that in mind, our team is looking forward to celebrating Earth Day this month on Wednesday, Apr. 22! Through TZ Carez, our in-house charitable program, we’ve given back to the Earth in the past and plan to continue doing so going forward. Most recently, TZ Carez partnered with the City of Tualatin’s Putting Down Roots in Tualatin volunteer program to remove invasive species from Tualatin Community Park. Our team of 21 volunteers spent several hours in the park on Sept. 5, rescuing native shrubs and trees from the stranglehold of invasive Himalayan blackberry, reed canary grass, morning glory, and more. We also distributed approximately 300 gallons of water to native plants to help them thrive. “Not only were we out there getting our time in and doing this cleanup, but we also learned a lot about invasive species, how people are trying to restore certain areas, and what things keep popping up that we have to constantly clean up and get rid of so they’re not destroying native habitat,” says TZ Marketing Director Mike MacClanathan, who volunteered at the park that day. “It was cool in the fact that no one felt like they were there because they were obligated to do it — everyone jumped in to help. We spent probably two hours there, and those two hours flew by because we were actually taking it seriously and spending a lot of time trying to clean up the area.” Madison Belzer, TZ’s medical device sales specialist and marketing project manager, also volunteered at the park. Like Mike, she really enjoyed spending time with her coworkers in the fresh air and giving back to the community. “I thought it was a really cool learning experience. I don’t know much about invasive plants or which plants are invasive in our local area. It was cool to learn what they were, see them firsthand, and realize that these were the ones we needed to remove from the natural habitat to make sure the area thrives and doesn’t end up dying because of these invasive plants,” Madison says, adding, “It was also a great team-building exercise and got us out of the office for a couple hours!” Jillian Darrow, who you heard from in our last newsletter, spearheads TZ Carez and helped organize the park cleanup. She had a great time and the event, and says she plans to continue the volunteer partnership going forward. “This is the first volunteer opportunity TZ Carez has done with the City of Tualatin, but we look forward to doing more in the future as the weather clears up,” she says. Our TZ Carez events are just for employees, but if you’re in the Portland area and looking for a way to give back to the planet this Earth Day, Putting Down Roots in Tualatin is always looking for volunteers! A NEW HORIZON IN WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY SO, WHAT IS 5G?

Few things change faster than the internet, and how we connect with the internet is constantly evolving. When it comes to wireless capabilities, fourth-generation (4G) networks have been the norm for 10 years. But 4G couldn’t meet demands forever, and there’s already talk of a fifth-generation (5G) network taking center stage. So, what makes 5G different from 4G, and how will it affect consumers and their internet-enabled devices?

cables. As technology improves and more connection points are established around the globe, new network generations are “released” to represent significant advancements in speed and reach.

to download a simple 5-megabyte music file, a 5G network will be able to download an entire movie in less than two seconds.

WHAT’S NEXT?

HOW POWERFUL WILL IT BE?

These network updates are all about speed, but that doesn’t mean you should rush to switch your cellphone over to 5G. Many providers are still testing the service with select markets, and a full rollout of 5G isn’t expected until later this year. Check with your network provider about the options they currently offer and get ready to connect with the world like never before.

Consumers will notice the rise of 5G mostly with their smartphones. Apps and services that function using the internet will have fewer delays, faster loading times, more reliable internet access in remote locations, and more stable downloading and uploading capabilities. Experts predict that 5G will provide download speeds of up to 10,000 megabits per second, which is roughly 100 times faster than 4G. While it can take a 4G network upward of 15 seconds

WHAT ARE THE BASICS?

Simply put, 5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology that enables mobile devices like cellphones and stationary devices like desktop computers to send and receive data without being physically connected to a network via

A NEW WAY TO COMMUNICATE IN THE CATH LAB HAVE YOU TRIED OUR PRO11 WIRELESS HEADSET SYSTEM?

The cath lab is a challenging environment to work in, and it’s made even more difficult by communication hurdles. Odds are, you’ve been mid- procedure in the past and found yourself raising your voice to give an instruction or straining to hear another member of your team. This isn’t ideal for you or your patients. You both deserve an experience free from stress and confusion, which is where our Pro11 Wireless Headset System comes in. Recently, our inventory here at TZ Medical has pivoted from focusing primarily on devices designed for specific procedures to taking a more well- rounded approach that includes other areas, like communication. That shift inspired us to design and release our Pro11 Wireless Headset System, which enables teams to talk hands-free in the Cath Lab, EP Lab, and adjacent rooms with ease. Instead of struggling to communicate, teams using the Pro11 system can engage in clear, calm communication, reducing stress and creating a better working environment for everyone. In addition to that function, the system has full connectivity with external broadcast and audiovisual streaming facilities, enabling physicians to participate real-time in remote broadcasts and seminars. Using high-quality DECT frequencies, multiple systems can be used in the same premises without interference.

The Pro11 system is comprehensive, and includes multiple parts and accessories, including a base station and charger. Each headset comes with a battery and headband, and additional batteries, headbands, neckbands, hygiene covers, and ear cushions are available on our website, along with a battery charger shelf. To learn more or place an order, visit TZMedical.com and select “Cardiac Cath Lab” under the Products tab. Your team and your patients will thank you.

MY CRAZIEST CATH LAB MOMENT HOW TECH ROB SOUZA HELPED SAVE HIS NEIGHBOR’S LIFE If you read our October newsletter, then you probably remember Rob Souza, the air force veteran turned cath lab technician who designed our line of Comfort Zone products. Rob has decades of experience in the cath lab, and over the years, he’s built a portfolio of funny, shocking, and mind- blowing stories from behind its doors. A while back, we convinced him to share a few of them on our podcast, “The Spark Podcast.” One of our favorite stories was the one Rob calls his craziest experience in the cath lab. It started when he was pulled into the ER to assist with an unknown procedure. When he walked in and caught sight of the patient, he knew right away that she looked familiar. “She had a hip procedure done, so she was short of breath. So you put two and two together, and you think she’s there for a pulmonary embolism,” Rob says. “She was having some chest pain ... I looked at her, and I looked at her records, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is one of my neighbors.’” When Rob checked for a pulse in his neighbor’s feet, he couldn’t find one, and he quickly realized she was in pulseless electrical activity (PEA). Then, her eyes rolled back. “I jumped on top of her. Fortunately, her husband was right there, and I started to do CPR on her right there on the gurney in the ER,” Rob says. “Next thing I know, we’re wheeling her to the cath lab, and I’m sitting on top of her, doing CPR all the way up.” In the lab, Rob and his team rushed to remove the clot from the patient’s pulmonary artery. The procedure went well, and they brought her back from the brink. Just a few weeks later, Rob was relieved to see her walking through their shared neighborhood. “Techs don’t get a lot of thanks and recognition, and neither do nurses, but we know why we’re here,” Rob says. “ … Just knowing that I was part of saving a life, extending somebody's life, or improving their quality of life — that fills my tank.”
