Welcome to our Workforce
A little over two years ago Virginia Garcia began the Workforce Development Program with the intention of “growing our own” and addressing critical staffing needs – including Medical Assistants, Dental Assistants, and Pharmacy Technicians. With your help, we have been able to do just that while also prioritizing community members and patients who have an interest in joining the health care field. Come take a quick stroll through the past year and see how we are changing the lives and the health of our communities.

2023 YEAR IN REVIEW
Workforce Development - Preparing for the future of Health Care
2023 efforts generated some big wins in workforce development. Virginia Garcia offered several career path development opportunities as a way to retain and enhance the needs of our staff and our organization. The payoff? HUGE.
Over the past year we have:
Hired 11 Dental Assistants from VG WFD programs.
Hired 14 Medical Assistants from VG WFD programs.
And we aren’t stopping there. Currently we have:
5 students enrolled in VG WFD programs (3 DA Apprentices and 2 MA Apprentices). 1 of our Allied Health West MA Apprentices just graduated early with one of the highest CCMA scores the program has ever seen.
16 staff members joined the MA & DA programs in March 2024 (16 MA/ 3 DA).
These programs have not only increased patient care access and boosted revenue for the organization by filling critical staffing roles. They have allowed our clinics to see the best staffing numbers since 2019.
32/33 FTE filled for Dental Assistants – best we have seen in 3 years
64/73 FTE filled for Medical Assistants – best we have seen in 3 years

The Maria Loredo Workforce Development Fund
Tuition Reimbursement Program
Maria Loredo lived the mission of Virginia Garcia. Starting as a front desk receptionist when there was only one clinic she occupied just about every job role there was and helped to grow this organization clinic by clinic. Maria served as the Chief Operations Officer for more than 20 years and she knew how important this organization was to the community because she was part of it. When she retired after 45 years, the Maria Loredo Workforce Development Fund was created in her honor. As of today, that fund has supported 70 staff members with more than $400,000 in their career advancement. The program is an application-based, targeted reimbursement program. It is designed to support staff who are pursuing education and certificate-level training that could directly benefit our organization. Most courses of study or job-related certification programs will qualify. That includes general college coursework related to getting an AA or Bachelor's degree, and pre- requisite classes being taken in preparation for other programs. Certification programs related to an employee's current job or to a future role within the organization are also very likely to be approved. Examples of Tuition Assistance programs we have supported : Associate degree pursuing dental hygiene. Nursing Bachelor of Science Masters in Nursing Master of Social Work Physician Assistant Bachelor of Science
Psychology Bachelor of Science Counseling Bachelor of Science

STAFF STORY Medical Assistant Melissa Tescagua Melissa Tescagua always wanted to to be a medical assistant. It just wasn’t in the cards.... at least that’s what she thought.
Virginia Garcia’s MA program, in partnership with the National Institute of Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA), changed all that.
Melissa worked her way up, first starting at the front desk in Hillsboro and then moving to Team Assistant, she jumped at the chance to apply for the MA program when it became available. “...if I wasn’t at Virginia Garcia, I wouldn’t of had this opportunity... and so I’m very grateful that Virginia Garcia was able to provide this for me.”
Melissa joins 13 other medical assistants that were able to take advantage of the medical assisting program at Virginia Garcia. Click on the image below and hear Melissa’s story.

2024 - ON THE HORIZON
NURSING The collaboration between Portland Community College, Linfield and Virginia Garcia is a strategic partnership that helps plant seeds for our future nursing workforce. Our first round of nursing students recently completed their first term of nursing school rotations at the Virginia Garcia Beaverton Wellness Center. Three first year students each completed 60 hours of clinical experiences this past fall. The collaboration between with our nursing school partners continues to grow as we enter the new year. Beginning January 8th, we have new rounds of students from the PCC and Linfield nursing programs at the Hillsboro and Cornelius clinics.
DENTAL HYGIENE Virginia Garcia has been collaborating with Portland Community College and Mount Hood Community College providing Dental Hygiene students with clinical rotations in a community health center setting. Starting in winter term 2024, these students will begin clinical rotations at our clinics, providing opportunities to treat our diverse patient populations and learn about patient care in a community health care setting.
