MOUNTAIN RANGES Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, we don’t have to go far to find mountaintop winter activities. If skiing or tubing is your idea of winter fun, Bogus Basin is just a short drive away, and heading to McCall makes a fun weekend getaway. ... AND RIVERS Not only are we surrounded by the Payette and Boise rivers, Idaho is also home to the deepest gorge in North America: Hells Canyon. Take that, Arizona!

DID YOU KNOW?

the same exact spot he’d sat when I was there! He was older but looked almost the same. He didn’t recognize me at first, but I’d brought pictures from my days living there, and I happened to have one of us playing music together. He looked at the picture, and then at me. “That’s you!” he said. We talked and reminisced about the time that had passed. It was an amazing and surreal moment. Before our trip, I’d wondered what (and who) I might see from my days there. It was a fun surprise to learn that Jesus was there, still playing music and encouraging others to do the same. Probably the biggest highlight of the trip for both Beth and me was our hike along The Cares Trail in Asturias. It’s a gorgeous 7 1/2-mile hike through the mountains. We left in the morning and hiked to a small village at the end of the trail, where we stopped and had lunch. While you can take a taxi back down the trail, Beth and I opted for the more scenic route. As we hiked the 7 1/2 miles back, the incredible views and picturesque scenes made it more than worth it. After all that hiking and walking around, we were ready to return to Idaho and settle back into life! I’ve found that if you vacation right, you’re ready to return home. –Dr. Elkins
FRIDAY THE 13TH
Sept. 13 just so happens to land on a Friday this year. What’s someone with triskaidekaphobia — fear of the number 13 — to do? Historically, the number 13 has been associated with bad luck and nefarious omens. The Bible may have something to do with this: Cain is said to have killed Abel on Friday the 13th. Ancient Babylonians also
avoided 13, leaving the number out of their list of laws. Sailors, too, carried forth the superstition. They would not go to sea with a crew of 13. In contrast, the Ancient Mayans felt 13 was a sacred number. So, will you spend Friday the 13th avoiding
all the potential pitfalls (and black cats), or will you embrace the day and enjoy it? After all, it is Friday.
